The talent acquisition process is very much the same, they look at the content they make, if they fit the character, and how "successful" they were beforehand. They always pick people who are at least guaranteed success based almost entirely based on numbers.
Lamy and Polka had good numbers beforehand, and Laplus and Chloe were both fairly popular as well. But it's a little different because the JP side is probably much more competitive and you are less likely to find indie channels that are in the hundreds of thousands of subs unless it's a singer or actress.
