Catching up on IRyS's live, I really enjoyed how "otaku core" it felt outside of the guests, it's hard to explain, but it's the sort of playlist you'd hear at an anime convention or manga store. I think the issue with these games having actual game play is that if you fail enough is that it really sucks the steam of of the spooky bits as games with instakill mechanics are just kind of annoying to deal with regardless of genre.

That's a big issue with the genre. wheras you can empathize with the characters of a movie or book when they are in danger, a video game character has the unique ability to just revive repeatedly until they win. There's no real sense of danger once you realize that you can't really lose anything. I've been more scared of losing my souls in a souls game than anything in a modern horror game

That's any horror game really. That's why good horror typically involves more being scared of things that are not there and less fighting and dying. Every time a spooky thing catches you and throws you onto loading screen it's just a reminder there was never any danger and you're a dumbass for even feeling scared. Poppy actually kind of gets it overall - the chase sequences are very rare and usually have a long buildup while they try to get you more tense. Squid game with the centipede is a cool idea IMO - you're forced to watch it slowly get close while not being allowed to move away. Standing in place waiting for an external condition(or hiding in general) is scarier than running because you have less control.
