The funniest part is that Ruby was implied to be a much more complicated character for a while at the beginning, but it turned out that was because the composer didn't understand the Japanese concept of a 'character image song' where music is written from the perspective of a character to say things they'd never say out loud on screen. You seem to be forgetting that ascension doesn't just happen from consuming leaves or being swallowed by the earth. You also ascend (reincarnate) by literally being killed, by the destruction of your body. Jaune's paper friend, in fact do try several times to ascend by committing suicide.
