I was actually thinking just last night about how other corpos of similar size have really managed to take off in the last few years but how Prism hasn't really made any headway in the same amount of time, and how it wouldn't surprise me if Prism didn't last much longer, but I didn't want to post about it here since it would just come off like shitposting. Go figure that this announcement actually came the very next day. I am thankful though that it's like Tsunderia's situation where they all get to keep their models and pivot to being indies. It sucks that the corporations that are nice enough to do something like that are the ones that end up closing their doors, while the evil, abusive ones just stick around in perpetuity.

I will say that the usual drama tourists acting like this is some massive tragedy and a harbinger of doom for vtubing and all that shit are just exhausting. None of them watched Prism to begin with. If anything they're part of the reason this happened because they give drama channels more attention and money than actual vtubers. But whatever. I'm just glad nothing will really change in terms of the actual streams, no need to worry about channels getting wiped or having to find a new channel to sub to, no need for them to spend money on new models. It was always going to be an uphill struggle for any Japan-based corpo to reach an overseas audience.
Aside from the language barrier, the market for Vtubers outside of Japan is far more geographically diffused and so logistics is a considerably greater effort when it comes to merchandise. Talents are likewise less centralized - and even if they were, there's not as much "infrastructure" for special stuff (ex. motion capture studios).

The cost of entry is low, but if you want to do something more than collect superchat income there are a lot of hurdles. And if skimming superchats is all you want to do, why be corpo at all? The talent's better off staying indie and paying a consultant once in a while.
