I like watching smaller Vtubers (mostly from here and /wasp/) and once in a while I'd ask myself "could I?" like I assume plenty of other people do.
I'd like to THINK I could, but doesn't everyone who hasn't been proven wrong the hard way?
I like to think of myself as clever, funny and maybe even charismatic under the right light, but who doesn't?
So I'm debating trying to dip my toes into streaming, like one or two streams to see if I enjoy doing it and what notes and rejects the people idle enough to watch it might have.
And then if I like it and people say "well, at least it's not hopeless" I could think about doing it regularly-ish as a hobby.
Obviously I'd like to invest as little as possible into it before deciding if I even want to keep going with it.

So here's the actual question; how little investment can I get away with and still call what I did Vtubing?
I want to be in a position where I can say

I think you should at least get/make a premade model or a png. Then stream a few times, making sure to advertise yourself here and maybe to your friends.

You will probably find out pretty quickly if you like it. Especially if you can have a few chatters to help you along. I think if you are streaming to absolutely nobody you wont know for sure. But having real live chatters watching you is a bit of a rush that can make streaming actually worth it.

Probably a good idea to get some feedback on how you are doing. Its a pretty important part of streaming and how you handle it (or the feedback you get) can really determine if you are going to like streaming.

You don't need to invest anything on the hobby other than your time, but having some money helps.
A png model is cheap and if you are an artist you can make one yourself.
If you know how to make a good 3d model you can do that too.

But a few things you need to know, most viewers will not enjoy scuffed audio, if you are playing games they will also hate it if the game is running like shit, depending on your content things like collabs could be a turnoff to your audience too.

i think this is a pretty flawed mindset that a lot of people get into vtubing with. There are 2 routes you can go with it, a) dedicating yourself entirely to becoming an entertainer or b) use vtubing as social media and a way to make friends and interact with others with similar interests. both uses are valid, but sitting on the fence will more than likely just lead to a bad time. if you choose a, you should be confident in your ability to entertain, not just "if others can do it, maybe I can too". You should be thinking "I have something unique to offer with either my talent or personality" and more often than not, regardless of who you are, it's true. Everyone is unique and has different perspectives and experiences to share, it's just a matter of being confident enough in yourself to properly share those things in an entertaining way
