Japanese is able to convey things more succinctly because of kanji and different grammatical patterns that convey different tones of speech. Sure sometimes you have to work around it to try and convey meanings but we're talking about cases where they go out of their way to make it more "fancy" or in another word, better in their own opinion. I agree TL notes would be a better option than localizations 99% of the time, but with video games specifically there's the massive issue of where you even put TL notes. Putting them directly in the game would either fuck up formatting or require the translation team to program in some kind of glossary mechanic. Putting them in a manual outside of the game would probably lead to most people ignoring them and getting confused. The average gamer is fucking retarded. Even if they weren't ignored, where would you put them? Printed manuals largely don't exist anymore, an online manual would likely be subject to link rot, etc.
