They STARTED as a facerig competitor. So obviously they wouldn't use someone else's hardware when Hololive was originally PR branch of COVER used to advertise the face rigging.

On one hand i admire how much money some of the vshojo girls are putting twords their avatars, the tech is amazing there, the tracking superb, the costume quality as well. And hololive looks like some backwater town that once was the jewl of the region but has been fading for years without even realising.

But thats not the case, theyre doing really well. Also despite being sub par quality wise sometimes in terms of avatars, they do have like 30 people to manage, not to mention the vshojo changing to a new skin every day of the week just makes it less exciting, the old new costume barely had time to settle in. Sometimes less is more, but objectively tracking should be updated to something better at the very least, some of the girls look like sock puppets, but maybe thats part of the charm?

I think this is partly related to anime lip flaps vs western cartoons actually animating the mouths to match the words. People in Japan are used to anime character just opening and closing their mouths to talk but even shitty no-budget season 1 South Park animated different mouth shapes.
(not saying this is laziness on the part of the Japanese animators it's due to the voices being recorded after animation is already complete while in the west the voices are done pre-animation)
