I truly never understood this question, は will NEVER be about the subject not even in 10000 years. は is the topic of the sentence and が IS the subject, basically when you put a は there is still a が behind it but hidden, は can also be used for the object, the place, the target and every part of a Japanese sentence. What it does is take something already known, enlightens it and tells more thing about it, that's all. Meanwhile when you see just a が it means the subject is a new thing and you want to put attention on it.
For example 沙花叉ちゃんは臭い meaning Sakamata is stinky, here Sakamata is both the topic because Sakamata was already on topic and you want add informations about it. You can also have both は and が in the same sentence, for example 俺は日本語ができない, which literally means something like For me Japanese language is not doable, and in this sentence 俺 is clearly not the subject.

But they can't quite manage Ririka's level of spontaneous chemistry with EN collab partners or chat because they're more academically trained, while she's more immersion trained. Because they take the time to think up an answer in Japanese and then translate it to English, there's always a delay, and because there's a delay their collab partner gets tempted to use simpler or more formal English in an attempt to help, but that throws off the connection, whereas with Ririka answering back immediately, even if she gets a small thing wrong, they feel more comfortable to talk like they normally do. If the "going" part is the part you're hung up on, it's a word indicating motion. Motion is used to describe progress in many contexts in our language. It implies a future result in the same way it can be used to describe the future. "It is [going] to snow" "I am [going] to shit yourself."

It makes perfect sense, and can be easily explained by many people who use the language. NTA but I would argue "how do you do" makes less sense when dissected.

They often literally do. The counter for books is 冊 and it means book and it's literally a pictograph of strips of bamboo tied together into a scroll, which was the ancient equivalent of a book.

The more reasonable thing to be frustrated by is that some of the counters group together things that don't seem to have anything in common, like why 杯 counts cups of drinks, but also octopi, or why rabbits are counted with the counter for birds 羽 instead of the counter for small animals 匹.

But on the other hand, it's not like hard to follow logic is unique to Japanese or foreign to English. Go ahead and try and convince me why it makes logical sense that birds travel in flocks but crows travel in murders, or why exactly a flock of horses is wrong and a herd of birds is wrong but a flock of sheep and a herd of sheep are both ok.

Those aren't the same at all. Wood, liquids, paper, they are all materials or some other uncountable matter. You can have X cups/bottles/liters of water, so it makes sense to specify a unit of measurement.
But in Japanese they also have retarded shit like X <small-animals> of dog. As if "dog" can come in some other unit instead of "small animal".

Usually it's based on the animal behaviour. A herd is for domesticated animals. A brood is used for chickens because of the way they are hatched. Flock is used for people as well, as a large dense group that moves together (horses are more spread out). I'm guessing there is some biblical tie that links flocks to sheep but I don't know.

Usually it's intuitive depending on the animal behaviour. Nobody says murder of crows unless they want to tell you a fun fact that nobody cares about. The rest of the "group names" for birds were probably made up by poets or people trying to be clever.

It's not even that 冊 is only used as a book counter, it's also used in kanji compounds and guess what it means? It means book. 大 means big and 冊 means book and so 大冊 means big book. 小 means small, combine with 冊 for 小冊, booklet. 別 is separate, combine with 冊 for 別冊, supplementary volume/issue.

You can totally just say 4 small animals, 四匹, and stop there and let implied context inform what type of small animals you're talking about, in the same way you can ask for 4 glasses in English and stop there and let context say whether you mean water or wine or whatever. And just like in English, where if you want to be explicit you can say 4 glasses of water, in Japanese you can say 四匹の犬 if you want to explicitly specify dogs.
