Thanks to internet however, you don't have to bring any facet of your real life into your online identity if you don't want to. There's a reason most rando internet using Japs are so fucking protective of their offline identities. It allows them to flout the "confirmist" culture without facing backlash from their job, family or "friends". It also allows them to shout out their love without getting hammered down by the rest of society.
Virtual idols also offer an enticing win-win package to both sides, wherein the idol could have a private life, relationships, marriage and even kids if they wanted, and could still work as an idol because the "character" they play was still single and dedicated to their audience.
"Scandals" for V-idols are also a lot more difficult to "manufacture", because the V-otaku simply discard everything about a VTuber's roommate as irrelevant. And because anyone who watches a VTuber stream is themselves considered a V豚 so hate-watching fags will get shit on from both normies AND V-otaku.
This allows them to have the most powerful of copes where they can still watch and have fun with their chosen V-oshi without ever needing to worry about the married life of whoever is playing them.
There's also the fact that the 20-somethings that used to be around in the idol era have now become 40-50 year old ojisans, hence there's a growing population of otaku ojisans who have enough life experience and societal respect to push back on dogshit opinions in non-sperg ways without impacting their personal, work or family life.

Of course, the gossip mongers that grew up on these magazines have also turned into middle-aged fucks, whose very hobby is inherited from their decades of trying to shit on otaku - hence the reason why VTuber "drama" is STILL being pushed, manufactured etc. to this day. The anonymity of the internet helps them avoid getting shamed as well, which is why corpos and their fans try to get doxx on the fags slandering chuubas. Revealing their misdeeds to friends, family and their workplace (if any) gives them irl consequences they can't escape from, even if they don't get arrested.

The "immunity" to normalfags looking to ruin their fun has ALWAYS been something that otakus wanted.
Which is why they're SO steadfast on only treating whatever happens on stream as gospel.
Counterintuitively, this is why black corpos and chuubas that require you to follow their roommmate to have context for their on-stream activities (EN example is the idolEN ghost girl, JP example is Kizuna Ai, Sio and a bunch of nijis) are becoming less and less popular.
People just want to have their cope that the anime girl is gonna be around to entertain them for a while. They don't want them to leave from offstream drama.
Which is also why ON-STREAM drama is something that is ABSOLUTELY TABOO.
