Basic things most newbies skip is work on your twitter game. The reverse is also true, too much focus on your twitter time comes at demerit of your streaming time.
For now it is actually better if you dont focus on the numbers per se but instead dedicate yourself to improve yourself a bit everyday.

Anyways, I don't know anything about you so I'll try to make this detailed enough to be useful but also general enough since I don't know exactly what you're looking for. Let me know if you have any questions.

>Market size
This post is going to be primarily about Touhou games, since I'm most familiar with those, and I'm assuming they're what you had in mind as well.
The first thing you need to accept if you're going to specialize in danmaku is that the current market size is pretty small. A really good player like Yatsuzume (male, non-vt) can get around 100 CCV when going for a huge goal. The Touhou World Cup event (the biggest happening of the year for Touhou players) gets around 500 CCV for its English broadcast (but a lot more in Japan & China). Popular streamers can get good or even slightly above average numbers streaming Touhou (4 to 5view range) - like grayfruit, beatMARIO or the few holos who've played it. But the average nobody streaming in the Touhou Project twitch category will get a couple dozen viewers at most (many of those being experienced players watching for the category, not necessarily for you). Still, for the most part, viewers don't come for Touhou but they CAN come to root for the person playing it. You'll need a likeable personality, some luck and a lot of creativity if you want to build a streaming career off danmaku games - in fact, if you could do that, you'd be one of the first people in the world to do it (second after Mushi if I'm not mistaken).

>Gaining the initial 2hu viewer base
Thankfully, this is the easy part. People do watch and interact with Touhou streams just out of sheer interest for seeing a new person try them. Simply by having the category on your stream, you should start to see a few names that can form the start of your viewerbase and that'll keep you company in the 1view and 2view stages. Do some networking in the major gameplay-centric discord servers (#danmaku in the Touhou Project server, and the Touhou Replay Showcase community server (which has a #streams channel for shilling yourself) - there's a few others, but I believe those two are the main ones). Don't worry too much about being a newfag, unlike what 4chan might have you think, the Touhou gameplay community is welcoming to a fault and playing on Easy is fucking fine. You'll meet a lot of cool folks who can help you with pretty much anything you wanna try. Also, having your avatar/brand reflect your love for Touhou/gaming/NEETness would probably be a good idea, but I'm no expert on that.

What I've just described closely lines up with what VTuber Mushi did to start out. She's now a somewhat well-known indie with around 10k followers on both Twitch and Twitter, but unfortunately she moved away from being primarily Touhou-focused and she hasn't streamed in a while (she's currently mostly posting pics of herself on twitter, which I would really advise against doing as an oldgen vtubing fan). Still, if you could get in contact with her, her perspective on this would probably be invaluable.

>What to stream
First time discovery and gitting gud at the games. Getting anything done in danmaku is inherently a big time investment, and there is a LOT to do - dozens of games to try and conquer, 4 difficulty levels to climb up, and many side challenges as well. Viewers will root for you and want to see you improve. Self-improvement is really the driving force for every Touhou player and seeing it happen in real time is deeply satisfying both for you and your viewers. Don't be afraid to hop from one challenge to another in this stage. You'll learn a lot about the series and the basics of dodging and managing your resources, while also bringing variety to your stream and prolonging the whole process (game-hopping is not optimal if your goal is just to beat a game, obviously). Make sure to publicize your first 1cc, it's a huge personal achievement!
Once your skill level and perseverence allows it, you can start going for high-level grinds. The kinds of grinds people want to watch: improving your No Bomb survival personal bests on Hard/Lunatic/Extra, getting a perfect Hard/Lunatic/Extra run, setting and improving your score PB on Hard/Lunatic/Extra (this one is a niche within a niche, so maybe don't), 100% completion of scene games, the No Items challenge in Impossible Spell Card (TH14.3)...
You can also vary your content with: fangames (danmakufu scripts, gamejam games, meme thcrap patches), other games (well-known non-Touhou shmups, Len'en, other well-known hard single-player games), non-game Touhou related interests (doujin works, drawing, programming, music-making, etc.), or really anything you want. Just make sure you're still mostly delivering what people are following you for to keep them hooked.

>What not to stream
Dead air and repetition kills streams. Touhou necessarily involves a lot of practice, but you should try to avoid practicing for too long during a stream. Even though it'll help you beat the game, nobody wants to watch you do a 20-set of a hard spellcard in complete silence. Figuring out a pattern and talking about it is fine. Simply trying to get better at a pattern you already understand is something you should keep off-stream or in short bursts. Also, finish your god damn runs. Every player understands "early game jail" (resetting a lot in the early game because things don't go your way), but nobody wants to watch it. Even if you game over, put in a continue and finish the run. You'll actually improve faster if you keep this in mind.

>Potential ways to make it big
As I said before, you'll need a lot of creativity and ingenuinity for this. If you manage to hit it big and still have primarily danmaku-focused content, you'd be a genuine trailblazer. It's possible though - Touhou itself is not niche, only the games are. You'd genuinely be surprised to know how much of the internet knows about/used to be into/is currently into Touhou media. You'll need to resonate with these potential viewers outside of Twitch if you want to draw in large amounts of them - I'd honestly recommend trying your luck with making some YouTube videos showcasing your autistic passion for either the series or the genre and advertising them on Reddit, YT Shorts and TikTok. Making content about extremely popular Touhou doujin works is a surefire way to get some views. To market danmaku videos to the outside world, you should most likely take a page out of other hardcore single-player gaming communities with healthy YouTube ecosystems, like rhythm games and the entirety of speedrunning. Touhous aren't remotely close to being the world's most difficult games once you know how to play them, but you sure as hell want to make it seem that way in your thumbnails. Clickbait people off the sheer premise of a cute girl conquering a humanly impossible challenge... but also explain to any new viewers what they're looking at so that they don't just get confused and click off (seriously, that'll happen a lot - you might wanna get used to speedrunning basic and clear explanations as well). Once you get to around the current average skill level (ability to 1cc hard/luna/extra), you'll really start to dazzle, impress, even mystify new viewers with your skills and it'll hopefully keep them curious enough to stay. People do like a sweaty gamer girl (looking at you, dokibird).
While I think taking the time/effort to grow your brand outside of just your stream is important to make this work and I gave you some suggestions, you should of course also grow your stream's viewerbase directly. Network with other active Touhou streamers so that they raid you when you're on, and potentially collab with them. Some names of good people to know: Punderfullll (female), AspreyFM, Yatsuzume, Gastari/Touhou Replay Showcase, Kana, aisu_lemona (JP), Suwawako & Clownplease on YouTube... (or anyone here who grabs your attention: https://streamscharts.com/channels?game=touhou-project).). Some known indies who'd be down: BatAtVideoGames, Shondo, Girl_DM, Pippa, Mint Fantome (come back please). And from big name corpos (good luck): Mori, Fuwamoco, lots of HoloJP. Some danmaku collab ideas: PvP games (PoFV/TH9, UDoALG/TH19), CO-OP games (ZeroRanger is really good for it), racing (Touhou 15 Pointdevice mode (aka checkpoints w/ infinite retries), scene game (TH9.5/12.5/14.5/16.5/18.5) bingo, or playing any maingame at the same time and trying to get the best run).

TH6 - Embodiment of Scarlet Devil: Oldest, jankiest, most popular one. Full of nasty patterns and missing tons of QOL, but normies recognize it.
TH7 - Perfect Cherry Blossom: Relatively easy but very long. Unique gimmick will save you a lot but actually understanding how it works is difficult.
TH8 - Imperishable Night: Very feature-rich game, iconic soundtrack and lore, considered one of the best for beginners. May teach you bad bombing habits due to unique gimmick.
TH9 - Phantasmagoria of Flower View: PvP game (with story mode). Great atmosphere, fun gameplay loop, but it's not for everyone.
TH10 - Mountain of Faith: Easiest game by far if you use your bombs, thus also a good beginner game.
TH11 - Subterranean Animism: Difficulty peak for Normal difficulty. Very fun early game, stressful late game.
TH12 - Undefined Fantastic Object: Difficulty peak for Hard and Lunatic difficulty. Unique gimmick is important but can get annoying quick. Will require routing.
TH13 - Ten Desires: Unique gimmick is fully controllable and only beneficial, pretty much more pattern-skip resources to use. Makes for an easier game, thus also quite beginner friendly.
TH14 - Double Dealing Character: Extremely gimmicky but that's also its charm. Have fun discovering that one lol

TH15 - Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom: Inspired by IWBTG, that should tell you all you need to know. Pointdevice mode is fun if you don't softlock yourself at the end by spending your bombs (only game where over-spending bombs is really an issue). You'll need a strong will to get through it, but you can take it as slow as you want. Expect lots of skill checks and puzzles.
TH16 - Hidden Star in Four Seasons: Very lopsided, boring early game and hard as balls late game. Unique gimmick is also controllable/beneficial, so use it well.
TH17 - Wily Beast & Weakest Creature: Pretty easy and has an interesting gimmick similar to TH12's. Also a good beginner game.
TH18 - Unconnected Marketeers: Hard, but has by far the most malleable gimmick in the series. Invites experimentation. Lots to discover, no 2 playthrough is the same.
TH19 - Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost: PvP game (with story mode). Has many issues but the campaign story is really interesting and it's fun to play with friends.
Games that natively support spell practice: TH8, TH13, TH14, TH16, TH17, TH18
Don't bother with PC-98 games, keep them for later. I strongly recommend against going in chronological order.

TH9.5 - Shoot the Bullet: Camera scene game. Relaxing, filled with puzzles and familiar characters.
TH12.5 - Double Spoiler: Camera scene game. Same as above, a bit easier overall but has more content.
TH12.8 - Great Fairy War: Token Cirno game. Short, fun, extremely unique playstyle, but requires pretty heavy routing.
TH14.3 - Impossible Spell Card: Woops! All puzzles. Extremely interesting but hard to describe without spoiling.
TH16.5 - Violet Detector: Controversial, a bit rushed, a bit easy. Can be fun to try out while you're still at a casual level.
TH18.5 - Hundredth Black Market: Similar description as above, but this one's a roguelike.

You can buy the games on Steam, but getting all of them costs way too much, especially if you're just trying to find what you like (demos are free to try but only have 3 stages out of 6).
Alternatively, pirate the games on Moriya Shrine. Every 2hu game download on MS comes with its own installation of thcrap (the patching tool used for the English patch), you'll likely want to delete it and have a central thcrap installation instead. Don't let people know you've pirated them, and try to avoid streaming ending screens as it goes against ZUN's wishes.

Try going for uncommon name, example: Calliope, Fauna, Amelia, Nina, Asteria
Or try going for a latin/Greek gods: Kronii (chronos), Ceres
Or a word play: Mysta Rias - mysterious, Niji excels in doing it VERY similar to their theme (Rosemi Lovelock is a rose, Uki Violeta is purple, Vesalius Bandage has bandages)
Try to write down colors and words associated with your theme, or just find a random japanese name (but these have a huge possibility of already being used)

Get comfortable with movement. It's really not complicated, you're just moving a dot around 2D space, but it'll still take time for you to align what you think you're doing to what you're actually doing. Your character has two movement speeds to switch between, and you should get used to figuring out the right tool for the job. Move your reading window up - don't center it on your player character. Bullets mostly come from above, so look there. How far up you should look will depend on the speed of the pattern. Recognize common pattern tropes: get used to finding gaps in circles, get used to rapidly tapping horizontal keys when bullets are aimed directly at you to maximize how long you have before getting walled (a technique known as "streaming" the bullets), etc. Practice a lot. Use thprac if the game's native practice options are lacking. Play lots of games, and try the scene games just to learn dodging skill (they offer a more zen environment where you can reset every pattern as much as you want).
Once you're somewhat comfortable with dodging, the other necessary skill to beat the game that you'll most likely be lacking is resource management. If you want to beat the games, use the bomb the game gives you. They're there for a reason. Don't be a hero against a pattern you know you're unlikely to survive, just bomb it well before you risk dying. Do NOT try to make use of deathbombing on purpose to save up bombs - it's unreliable, and you'll only lose them instead. You get 3 bombs every time you die in most games, so make sure you use them all. Once you do, you're free to play out of your mind to try to survive, you have no other option anyway. Almost every Touhou game actually gives way more resources than you need to clear if you're not constantly losing them because of your hubris.
