It is a lot but not for that that line of work from an overseas customer. There's only so many video editors, if it were truly that cheap as a standard, the market would funnel into India like call centre customer service did. But this work requires more finesse and training to do for a living than customer service. The requirements can vary greatly and its hard to do it efficiently too without a lot of experience/practice.

No idea if there's any truth to this story though.

That's very believable if the curry takeover is real. I used to do copywriting and editing on upwork. Indians would routinely pull shit like offering $20 USD for a quick proofread of an English document-- mostly 1000 word school papers and similar, short easy work-- only to turn around and try to increase the scope of the job while lowering the pay. I once had a guy stalk me for half a year because I refused to write his 10,000 word paper for five bucks. And I do mean actually write. The doc he sent me was 25 pages of pure gibberish and when I called him on it he called me a slut and went on a multiple email rant about how I should just do the work. It was the damnedest thing. I've outgrown that kind of work but even were that not the case I'd still never work for an Indian again. They're worse than Chinese students and the Chinese are god awful.
