I typically blame june's eroge arc + greyname incident that flipped the switch in his brain to get stubborn and bunker down hard of the worst aspects of his persona.

He was always the boy who said he didn't care about numbers initally but I know seeing the temporary jump across the board from playing eroge essentially broke him and gave him an major identity crisis of "Do people actually only like for the games I play?", with the greyname incident seemingly affirming those bad vibes swirling around in this brain, making him close himself off to only his select roons and molding his persona to suit their tastes to keep them loyal.

I get that's a component of it, but I also get the feeling that he just wants to challenge his audience and make them jump through hoops, no matter who they are and what they like. His personality seems to be aggressive contrarian who throws things you don't like in your face. I visited cbdct recently and saw a flayume whose last straw was the YTTD moment where he pretended to go off screen to kiss a character, they realised they hadn't had fun with his streams for a long time and just stuck with it being browbeaten until he hit the point closest to their heart. Which confuses me, because he yume baits so hard, but then he sends the yumes the ultimate challenge of their loyalty and filters them out even further. When will his audience be small enough, loyal enough, and prove to him that they love him enough? Little guy needs correction (therapy).

There's a handful of super gushy flayumes where I hang who would squeal and fall head over heels for his tsun act and sit through any amount of negging for the one little kiss on the ending screen, and genuinely loved it whenever he opened up and got soft. Haven't heard any of them gushing since the YTTD moment. They might just be quiet or busy, but I fear for their longevity.

Altare is softer yeah, I think he's just not over everything that's happened and his long term self-consciousness has been reaching an all-time high, he seems a little lost and trying to be inoffensive and small in (unconscious) self defense

There's always a risk to everything when trying to do it and some are simply going to stay more niche, which is fine. I don't really see him getting "softer" at all, he's just got less to complain about recently since good things are happening to him. I think his schedules have been a bit lackluster recently, but he's been a mix of sick and busy a lot of the time, which seemed to throw him off. I think it's something that will improve when he's back into the groove.

An easy way to put it is that the basic bones of Homestuck is pretty shounen-like mixed with internet meta of the time, western cartoon goof, and a lot of fanartist participation into the comic at some times. It was a lot of kids' and teens' first encounter at seeing a story that tried to be pretty ambitious in huge scale with how many different sets of characters from different worlds as a enormous cast would work together or clash together, and a lot of the draw was anticipating how the biggest personalities with pretty different backgrounds and ambitions would converge and clash. But the author's adderall addled brain and the story at its scale collapsed into a messy heap eventually
