I'm studying game dev, what kind of games do you guys think foob would fit?

Currently all I have is an idea of GAMERS members as prisoners trying to escape a facility by cooperation, either multiplayer with max of 2 or singleplayer with the option to switch characters like in Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

It sounds interesting to me, but the scope is a bit... Way above my current skills.

It's everyone, that's how the system works when there is a lot of activity on the board. During slow times it usually takes a bit over an hour from the top to bottom and during average times, about 45 minutes or so? Earlier it was like 15-20. If other generals aren't struggling, that means they have a lot more activity to begin with.

nihongo-jozu sukonbros, I want to love Fubu more, but I feel like I can't without taking learning the language more seriously. I've been at it for a few months, but still can't catch more than the odd word or expression. Best I can do is read hiragana like a first grader. Is that just something that takes time or am I doing it wrong? I'm getting pretty blasted with all this kanjishit, grammar, and sentence mining. Where should the focus be? I feel like all online searches only lead to faggots wanting to sell me subscriptions to their "courses"

>> No.68343284

>>68342729
tae kim is the grammar guide everyone recommends but I went with cure dolly, kanji gets a lot easier when you've worked though enough words that you intuitively know the meaning to kanji when you see a new word. I haven't been sentence mining just using a big anki deck and I've been very lazy with my learning too but I noticed a big difference when I stopped multitasking, can still only barely understand if I close my eyes and focus

She went to a concert with Holomen last week, the artist was King Gnu. She is member of the official fan club and managed to win the ticket lottery around November and got four tickets. She invited Mio, Rui and Irys to come along with her. She knew Rui would be interested because she sang a song by them before. She randomly met Irys in the studio and asked her if she liked the band and she did, so she told her about the tickets and she was interested. This is the first time she went to hang out with Irys. Mio had recently expressed interest in the artist as well, so she invited her, too. She said it was hard to meet up in front of Tokyo Dome, there were too many people and entrances all around the avenue. Most of them hadn't been to an actual band concert before and were wondering if they should bring penlights and stuff like that because they are only used to idol concerts. They got muffler towels and Shirakami bought a sweatshirt as well. The live was great. She thought there were many aspects of the stage that they should also consider for their lives. During calls for an encore, everyone used their smartphone flashlight instead of a penlight, which they found very interesting. She talked a lot about the secret special guest, Shiina Ringo. Mio was a big fan and wanted to go to a concert before, but never managed to get tickets so she was very exicted and could hardly believe it was her. Apparently, she took off parts of her clothes while seeing and exposed her shoulders, which Shirakami found very exciting. She said this was the kind of eros she could never attain, and admired her for her courage.

She has been watching the American cartoon Hazbin Hotel lately. She said there is a lot of swearing, violence and erotic content, she considers one episode borderline R18. She summarized the story and what she liked about it, but recommended not to watch it in the living room in front of your parents.

The next topic she talked about is old phones, specifically slide phones, and how she thinks they are pretty cool and also cute, especially those where the screen can rotate on an axis. She said she got interested in them lately and wants one, even though she supposedly never used one before. She likes how different and customizable these phones were and how schoolgirls at the time decorated them with straps and stuff and wished they still made them. She's also interested in older cameras like analog ones or polaroid and would like to use one.

The fox meme were her manager's idea because cat memes were popular lately and she had already done the chipichipi chapachapa stuff on Twitter before. She intends to do a more of them in the future and would be happy if we use it to make memes.

The Doroken official channel stuff was recorded a long time ago. She talked about some stuff that happened in it but I didn't understand much because I lacked the context as I haven't seen it yet.

Someone asked her to draw Poyoyo and she did, but kind of forgot how its face looked like, which she felt kind of embarrassed about because she was the one that invented it in the first place. She didn't really remember how to draw Hatotaurous either, it's been a long time since she made it. She tried to draw it from memory but the first few attempts ended up looking very different from the original. Someone said they want a Sukonbu mug so she made up a creepy design on the spot. I kinda want it.

I don't want to sound like one these people you are talking about, but you might want to check out the pastebin in the OP of this thread that I wrote like two years ago if you haven't already. There's probably better guides out there in general, but I tried to explain my experience with learning in order to understand Fubuki in detail and how I did it and put some resources in there. It does take time and the beginning is slow, but it's hard to judge if you are doing something "wrong" or in an inefficient way without knowing what exactly you are doing. In the first couple of months I would focus on a bunch of pre-made decks at first so you can build a decent base. Sentence mining only makes sense if you have an actual base vocabulary, otherwise it will be difficult to find comprehensible sentences because everything has like 8 new words. Grammar is not super important in the beginning, you don't need to frontload it and understand everything 100%, but having read a guide helps. You can just look up Grammar points as you encounter them later. You will pick up most of it as you go over time. The learning curve is steep but once you are over the first bump, it gets really fun because you will understand more and thus enjoy Japanese content more, which will in lead to you wanting to consume more of it, through which you will in turn learn more. Definitely try to stick it out and don't give up just because the beginning is difficult.

If you are into VNs, some of them offer to have both english and japanese subs on at the same time. And of course I always try to have a stream on even if I am not really watching. >> No.68346234

Yeah, I agree. Between video games, anime and Hololive, the vast majority of content I consume is in Japanese these days, so I get to learn for free while having fun. If you just watch or play whatever you like and make it a part of your everyday live like that, you can make good progress without it ever feeling a chore (except for doing your Anki reps for like half an hour every day). Also, with agent (https://github.com/0xDC00/agent)) progressing the way it did over the last couple of years, it's easier than ever, too. New games like Like a Dragon 8 and Person 3 Reload have only been out for a week or two but there are already hooking scripts available that make it really convenient to mine from them.

Exactly. It was the same for me except it was a couple of years later, we didn't have broadband internet while I was that young so my access to English media was limited at the time. Once I did have access, I never really went back. These days I even think in English most of the time despite it not being my native language and not living in an English speaking country. There's millions of people for whom it worked with English, so there is no reason why it wouldn't for Japanese.

I just read your pastebin. Should've maybe checked beforehand, but who would've guessed we have a repGOD ITT! Will get to the proper setups ASAP. Coincidentally, I'm off from work today, so no excuses.
I think I like your approach to learning - it also made me reflect on how I became fluent in English, which is - as you mentioned - by exposure and immersion for the largest part.
I've been using Anki already, so I got that right at least... but besides that, my sources have been a real mess so far. I dabbled with renshuu, wanikani and an actual physical textbook (which only serves as a coaster for drinks rn because it's so horrendously boring to learn with it). Maybe I should channel the focus into Anki after all.
I didn't really get how you do / did Kanji though. You wrote "by learning them in words"? Like, you just stare at the flashcard with the kanji in a word and try to remember it? No strokes, radicals whatever? It's been the biggest hang-up for me so far, so the wanikani approach seems pretty tempting, what with the systematic, modular approach and whatnot. But they might just want to coax you into a subscription after all...
Thanks though - a lot! For your stream summary as well. Shiina Ringo, huh? I thought she was talking about apples. Fml, seems like I still have a bit of a journey ahead of me...

Thanks for reading! I hope it was useful. To be clear, I'm nowhere near a master, I'm just an intermediate learner myself and most of this isn't original work, just a summary of many different websites and my experiences combined as a beginner's guide for our specific perspective as a Vtuber listener.
>Like, you just stare at the flashcard with the kanji in a word and try to remember it? No strokes, radicals whatever?
Basically, yes. Because our primary purpose is to understand spoken language, we don't need to know that many details about these Kanji. Stroke order isn't needed unless you plan to do a lot of writing on paper in the future, which has become less and less important over time. Even Japanese people themselves can't write any Kanji, just look at the academic test she did with Miko and Suisei the other day. Also, in today's zatsudan she didn't know how to write the second kanji in 地獄 while drawing either so she just wrote it in Hiragana. Because you just need to type in Romaji in order to get Kanji on a Japanese keyboard, even natives aren't great at writing on paper anymore in this day and age. It's more efficient for us to just skip it altogether and learn a bunch of new words in the time it would take you to fully master a single Kanji just in order to be able to write it, which you will very likely never ever need. You will probably be able to recognize and read slightly better if you know exactly how to write a Kanji, but just doing it by recognition is enough to read anything you want as well. You know how you can read an English word even if it's full of typos and the letters are all in the wrong order? It's a bit similar to that. By context and general shape of the Kanji, you will be able to recognize the word in context, even if you can't reproduce them. Over time, you will encounter certain Kanji as a part of different words and automatically figure out what they mean. For example, if you learned that 農家 means farmer, 農業 means farming and 農耕 means agriculture, then you might be able to deduce that 農 is always related to farming. If you then encounter the word 農作物 and already know the fairly common words 作る (= to make) and 物 (= thing), you can take an educated guess at what the word means based on this context, e.g. thing that you make through farming = crops). You never really learned any of these three Kanji by themselves, but through exposure in different compounds, you saw them in several different context, which gives you enough information to figure out roughly what they mean. It's hard in the beginning because you don't really know anything yet, but you will notice this effect fairly quickly if you stick to it. Confusing very similar Kanji like 詩/時/侍 definitely is an issue if you don't learn the Kanji in detail, but you can usually figure out by context which one is the correct one or just learn these few outliers in detail to figure out the difference, which is what I usually end up doing. Radicals would be nice to know for this exact purpose, as the only difference between these three Kanji is that they have different radicals, but there is no need to really go into detail and know what these radicals are actually called and the like. Just knowing what one is and using it to tell things apart is sufficient.

Anyway, you will see a lot of learners have trouble with listening in general because stuff like Textbooks poorly prepares you for it. This is the exact opposite for us, our main purpose is trying to get better at listening, but you need to learn Kanji in Japanese to be able to properly do so because of the massive amount of homonyms. There's no reason to slack and take shortcuts in that regard, you still need to do it properly even if it's tertiary to your goals. And as a nice bonus, it will unlock a lot of Japanese content for you that was previously inaccessible to you, which, in turn, will help you to continue progressing.

Sorry, another correction, I rushed the last paragraph because the thread was on the last page, but I forgot to say that we will automatically be good at listening because we watch streams every day, which will reinforce what we learned while doing our Anki reps. Because we get hours upon hours of exposure to spoken language, you will automatically get better at it as long as you increase the size of your vocabulary. In the beginning, it will be a very common occurrence for you to learn a couple of new word in Anki and suddenly hear them being used on a stream shortly thereafter, which will in turn also help your understanding of what you learned in Anki, it goes both way.

makes a lot of sense, really. I mean, I KNOW that I don't really need to care about stroke orders and (hand) written Kanji at all. Might just be the old-school "do it the proper way" conditioning ingrained in my ojisan brain. One of the main reasons why the first thing I did was buy a textbook as well.
Thinking way far ahead, another thing I want to consider is while I absolutely learn Japanese for myself and my weeb hobbies, it'd also be nice to get at least N5 or N4 certified at one point or the other. You know, might as well if you already put in all this time and effort...
It's not particularly useful in my profession, but we have a "foreign language pool" and Japanese is definitively on the very top rarity-wise. Would certainly turn a few heads in case a SSR Japanese "customer" shows up.
Anyways, I'll probably try grinding the core decks and the free levels of wanikani in tandem to see what's better and faster for me.
Thanks for all your effort, friend! I think I got most of the stuff set up by now! Fubu love!

>it'd also be nice to get at least N5 or N4 certified
My opinion is to avoid bothering with the lower certs. N2 and N1 are the only ones that "matter," and only really from a business perspective.
You can go for N3 if you want some validation on your progress I suppose, but N4 and N5 are basically pointless even for that. Also you can end up with N1 and still have no real output ability, which is why outside of personal validation or some business requirement, it's not really useful as a benchmark for properly knowing the language.
I personally plan to wait until I feel N1 ready, and only plan to get it because I want to eventually find a job at a company with a JP branch in hopes of using that to maybe move there. Granted I am being very leisure, and even almost 4 years in probably couldn't get an N2 because of my lack of real study. Have had plenty of fun playing games and reading stuff for the past ~3 years though.

As for the itazuraneko link being dead, it died at some point last year, well after the anon made that write-up. /djt/ in /jp/ will usually have replacements, depending on who made the thread. https://gohoneko.neocities.org/#read

I don't think it matters in my context. It's not like it would be actual translator work anyways, so they might even take my word for it if I told them I can speak Japanese. So it's probably just for personal validation, yeah.
The best validation would be getting Fubu-certified anyways - but that's a long journey, seeing I've been failing at the first Kanji flashcards for the last hour or so. I might be pictographically challenged.
Good luck on your N1 journey!

I agree with the other anon, don't bother with the JLPT unless you want to do N1 or N2, N5 is literally baby tier and N4 is not much better. If you end up doing the JLPT Tango sentence card decks (which I would probably suggest you do in addition to the core deck), which are also included in the resources sections of my pastebin and are based on exercise workbooks meant to prepare you for the JLTP, you will see that the early levels are really not very challenging at all. If you are serious about it you could probably easily clear the JLPT N1 after like 2 or maybe 3 years, so there's no need to take the lower levels.

Keep in mind that doing it "the proper way" is something that takes Japanese children 12 years in school. This is why 90% of Japanese learners drop out, it's just a matter of pride and offers you no real advantages. If you ever feel like you need to learn to write, just do it after having learned the actual language for a couple of years, that probably makes it much easier, too.

>>68363948
>The best validation would be getting Fubu-certified anyways - but that's a long journey
It will be, but the fun thing about is that you notice your rapid progress in real time. You will probably go from not understanding shit to understanding snippets and finally getting the general gist of things within less than a year.

got it. One last question after shitting up this thread for so long: I realize that the Anki deck I've been using so far (Jlabs beginner course) seems to be a more fun, anime-like kinda Tango deck. Only exception is that it uses Romanji in additon to the "normal" writing on the front side of the card. Should I get rid of that somehow? It's kinda nice but could be that its one of the causes that I'm getting assblasted at Kanji recognition...

I don't know this particular deck, but you should generally avoid Romaji at all cost, it should only ever be used when typing into a Japanese IME because that's how typing works in Japanese. If this deck indeed has Romaji in the front, that might be a reason why Kanji isn't sticking - there is no reason to learn the Kanji when the solution is already presented to you. A good card should ONLY have a Japanese word or sentence in the front in my opinion. I also put a button in front that gives me some context as a clue when I click on it, but I rarely use it. Audio, images and anything else should go on the back. Otherwise the card becomes to easy - you will just take shortcuts and rememember the answer based on the picture or Romaji instead of learning the Kanji. Romaji should ideally not be on the card at all - you will never need it, you can already read Hiragana. Here's what my setup looks like: https://files.catbox.moe/fg8tc2.mp4

I'm watching that hell hotel series Fubuki talked about, I must say it's something or it's just me not watching western cartoons in a while but outside the musical it has been ok.

Hi friends, retard tourist here, what is (^・ω・^§)ノ supposed to represent? Is it Fubuki? Is she waving or is that her tail?

That's her waving, yes. The § represents her braided hair.

Tbf it kinda is, this huge vtuber company has undeniable proof they treat their talents like shit and has been outed to the public by themselves, it's basically an inverse of the entire rushia situation. Not gonna surprise me if it goes on for more than a couple weeks due to how much baggage might come with the announcement and how big Nijisanji is on the board for shitposting, just going to have to be strong about keeping the thread up.

I agree, Fubuki got fat so we should make a bigger one that fits her new image.
