Around vt there's a sort of perception that the ideal male Vtuber is basically a flesh streamer with an anime puppet, or what constitutes a good streamer + anime (whichever way you prefer) which is extremely rare due to the odds of finding someone who's all of a good streamer, someone who likes / wants to be a Vtuber, AND without being overly tryhard with tropes or otherwise negative traits.

It's a big ask.

I don't use an anime avatar, I don't really like anime.

I've never understood this demand for vtubers to be in character when the people who serve as the prime example often aren't any kinda character, just a corpo with a design preset by someone else that they didn't choose themselves and has actually nothing to do with them.
Maybe some lean into the character more and hey that's cool but a majority of the time your clips are just japanese women making silly noises and not really playing any kind of role.

I feel you can have people who play a character but you can also have people who use it as a method to further express themselves as a person and those are the ones I appreciate the most.

But I also respect people who play characters too, that takes a lot of effort to keep up consistently.

Yeah lot of guys are doing pretty well for themselves. I think they just suffer from a lack of attention outside /asp/ because they do have the ability to hold onto at least a few viewers from raids. I think the only one who doesn't get raids is meat but he doesn't need them.

True, but you also have to take into account that they would lean to anime tropes while doing just that. They might not strictly follow lore but there's a certain framework and kayfabe to their characters.
eg. Sora still is the postergirl for untouchable angelic girl, Marine is genderbent Ryo Saeba, Nina is the mom of the group, Mysta is the bulliable bottom, Pikamee is the gremlin little sister, etc.
When people say the ideal male vtuber is just a streamer + avatar, they forgot about all of these small factors that makes up a character.

because most indie vtubers are solo for most of their streams it's up to the chat to create the role of the streamer.
