Mahjong is based on knowledge of the game, learning to count tiles, and the capacity that you have to predict situations. In high elo, if you dont conceal your hand, you will get 1 han'ed almost instantaneously because nobody wants to get ron pr tsumo by a 10k+ hand. Riichi is based on having more than one tile needed to ron/han, as well as seeing the odds of that number being in the hands of others (incredibly easy, just learn to watch the discarded tiles, mahjong soul already has a function integrated to get the amount of tiles unrevealed at all times, so you truly have it easy there) and not getting into riichi with just 1 tile left to complete you hand and that same one tile being the only one unrevealed of the 4 set. Luck plays almost no role on high skill, but you can try to increase it by learning jong.

First, you start by familiarity. You build up your knowledge of the rules.

You need every tool available in your tool kit before you begin your actual training.

Secondly, you start entertaining yourself.
Read mahjong books, watch mahjong shows, watch other people play mahjong. This allows you to feel empathy for different mahjong emotions. The more you can familiarize yourself with mahjong emotions, the more you can recognize these emotions in yourself and then control yourself. Japanese players are bad for this, because they don't want to show their more pitiful moments in the public eye, but English-speaking players get invested. It's almost on par with the FGC only less black people. Even fake stories like Akagi, Ten, or even Higurashi are good, because the writers feed off the real reactions people have to stress mahjong puts on them.

Thirdly, playing with a goal in mind. There's one way to measure success in mahjong games. Winning or losing based on a creel, indifferent number chart. You lose by playing correctly and you lose because you're fucking retarded are the same in the eyes of a ranking system. You're inability to convert a tenpai into a win could be from luck or self-destruction.

So, at this point, you need to play with a specific playing style. It's stupid because no one in tourneys or ranked so tunneled in, the point of being skilled at mahjong is to be flexible, but that flexibility comes from a plethora of learned expertise. something you don't have. So you're going to have to put the training weights on when no one else has them and going to sufferer for it.

There are a few different aspects of judgement you're going to have to delve into and focus on for each challenge these are:
>Defense: Reading and hiding from your opponents
>Attack: Playing against the wall or your opponents
>Transition: Determining how to deal with opponents
>Self-control: Recognizing your own playing style
>Psychology: Playing against other players and making them move as you wish.

These five different aspects are all things you can train up and work on in very focused exercises I'll tell you about.

Defense:
There is a mode of mahjong we all typically play: Yonma, 4-player mahjong.
Then there is a mode of mahjong typically looked down upon: Sanma, 3-player mahjong.
Sanma has nearly every tile of the manzu suit taken out making the games faster and more focused. It leads to bigger hands and more points exchanged. It also makes ponds easier to read. Usually, Sanma players will riichi without much thought because it's a joke format, but it makes it good for finding out who's in tenpai and who you need to defend against. Sanma is a good place to train yourself on defense. See what's actually safe, pretty safe, dangerous, and what's just a vague risk. Not every tile that isn't genbutsu is a tile that deals-in and there are risks you can take and you'll build up this recognition of defending from playing a lot of sanma, cause you only need to focus on two guys and two suits.

In terms of what order, I'd say Diva is best for beginners. Even though the manga is pretty bad, I did find the Kirinji manga enlightening in the beginning. From there it's about assuming what you prefer the most. If you want chess match thinking, Ten is great, if you want super powered nonsense Mudazumo is fun, with Akagi and Saki in-between.
>Streamers
Try any EN streamers or check out /mjg/'s past broadcasts and streams. Sometimes from players and sometimes as spectators.
JP streamers are fine too, but they lack a lot of impact most times.
You have vtubers like Senba Crow who plays into this iron wall of emotion who can let a double yakuman slip out of her fingers as if it was just dropping a penny out of her hand at the toll booth.
Then there are vtubers like Nina, who can contain herself against some bad beats but whines when she gets cucked too hard and has crisis of faith when she falls hard. So much she gets mahjong coaches.
M-League is where professionals play too, but again, they're very professional and don't let you in on how they feel in the middle of a match.

On /mjg/ repo there are movies you can watch that do play up the emotion and themes. Sakurai movies are good fun.

General defense theory revolves around wait type.
Mainly sequences as those are the more powerful waits.
inner tiles from 3 to 7 have three seq waits, two ryanmen and one kanchan. Tchenically 3 and seven have a penchan but that's still a third "side" to worry about
2 and 8 have two seq waits, one kanchan and one ryanmen.
1 and 9 have only one seq wait, a ryanmen.

This is why discard terminals first is preferred as they are the hardest to make sequences with.

As for you picture its showing how when the middle tile is discard it "destroys" one of the waits either side tile would have. Using the logic I explained earlier you can likely tell that discard a 4 or 6 makes the 1 or 9, respectively, extremely safe as the only wait that they could have would be for a pair or triplet which are less common and weaker waits in general. Inversely three and sevens are the most dangerous as even though the middle tile killed one of their waits there are still two other sequence waits to worry about.
