Today our cute rocket autist streams the first human flight of the New Shepard suborbital rocket.

anyone here familiar with why you'd want to use hydrogen as oxidizer for your suborbital rocket?

Hydrogen tends to be one of the more energetic fuels you can use for your rocket. So for small rocket you can get a lot of power for your thrust. Also LIFTOFF IS GO!

>> No.6815118

>>6815049
Hydrogen is fuel, not oxidizer.
Hydrolox rocket engines are the most efficient engines you can get.

Efficiency vs. cost. Also I think kerosene leaves more internal residue which may be an issue when reusing a rocket

Is hydrogen only good for suborbital shit?

>> No.6815211

>>6815103
>>6815118
thanks, it just seems a little odd given that hydrogen can be extremely difficult to handle, and it's pretty much a given that you should be able to do an efficient kerolox engine (like the Merlin 1-D)

>>6815188
no, the space shuttle used hydrogen

Nah man that's what you want when going big. Everyone's using it for Liquid fuel stuff unless you're wanting to go to some exotic shit like mono-propellants but those are mostly for RCS

Also TOUCHDOWN!

This is just an elaborate marketing shit. Bezos got off from the rocket or wasn't there at all, so there wasn't footage from the capsule because the one with him on it was just airdropped without a rocket. No way he's risking his life for marketting.

Merlin is not quite efficient in terms of ISP which is basically the most important characteristic of the engine. Only 311 s in vacuum because they are open-cycle (and thus simple and cheap). You can push RP1+LOX up to 338 s (RD-180, closed cycle)
LH2+LOX starts at 400 s. But hydrogen is a lot less dense and thus needs bigger tanks (also with thermal insulation), requires complex ignition system in the engine, evaporates in tanks and then leaks straight through metal, so it is rarely used. The only orbital rocket which uses it today is Delta IV.
The modern tendency is to move to CH4+LOX (Raptor, BE-4).

>> No.6816068

>>6815979
but isn't ISP a more critical function for second stages (of which NS does not have)?

and about BE-4, it strikes as double-odd that you'd move to CH-4 after investing in a hydrogen engine... unless the plan is to use NS as a test bed for a hydrogen powered second stage for New Glenn (i don't keep track of blue origin, so i'm all ears)

>> No.6816268

>>6816068
Yes, ISP in upper stages is more important than in lower ones, but it still defines your overall delta-V.
New Glenn will use LH2 and BE-3 engine in the upper stage if nothing changes. But for first stage the tank size required for hydrogen is probably just too big.

They really have, I hope so too. At the least the Atlas V launch itself will be fun to see. I'll be in the area for the week so if there is a delay I'll hopefully still be there for reattempts. I bought tickets to watch from the KSC Saturn V center/Banana Creek which is like 5 miles from the pad. I'm very excited.
