They do this all the time in various entertainment sectors, gov't, corpos, etc. basically anyone they deem could be potential competition. Microsoft and Google were pretty infamous back in the day for buying small competitors and paying them smaller and smaller salaries until they quit or shut down, or patents and their inventors for internet stuff and were then completely memory holed. I think EA and Ubisoft used to do this too with top level digital graphic artists, would hire super talented people and have them crank out a bunch of stuff for years and then throw it all in the garbage.
