I don't know what GPU you already have. But to properly train SDXL lora you need to be able to handle 1024x1024 training which is about 16gb vram on AMD without any performance enhancers like xformers.

In general, a good starting point for adding vtubers is the hll lora. It has quite a few vtubers, including Hololive and Nijisanji.

If you want a vtuber that you can't get with just hll, then the vtuber lora list in the OP is a massively useful resource.
One of the more popular models here is Exquisite details.

It's base style is fairly anime but you can adjust it with traditional artist tags for different styles.
The based6X models are another common choice, they usually have a smoother style but are good for use with style loras. https://civitai.com/user/AnonymousM/models
The latest Based model is Based68 which has a version of the hll model for furry models adapted for NAI built in.
The models above will be pretty good for gravure-type images and some simple sex scenes. Either find loras on Civitai or try out the EasyFluff model if you want more complex sex scenes.

I think the problem was less the overall size and more than my height:width ratio was somewhere around 3:1

EF does it a little better but it's still sort of weird looking. At least it doesn't have the issue the older models had where it would add extra heads halfway down the image I did have to inpaint a second bellybutton out of this one though

As long as there are no big loss fluctuations as in an order of magnitude, or if it goes to NaN, I have seen loss as pretty irrelevant for LoRAs. You can test this by simply frying one and observe how the loss value still fluctuates over time at the same rate even if the lora has been perfectly cooked 20 epoch prior.
I've mentioned Scale Weight Norms previously and I will keep doing it as I've seen how much it can help with not frying loras up to a point.
Another nice use of it is to keep track of the lora training. If you enable it, in your terminal, next to the loading bar, you will start seeing 2 new parameters. The weight average and the "Keys Scaled". There are no explanations for it i could find, but it's a numerical representation of how many things(vector weights) would have been fried if they weren't held back by the 'scale weight norms' setting. (Max Norm Regularization)
From my testing having a few of them for a few epochs is fine as it scales those fried things back while allowing some other concepts to train in the meantime, but if it keeps a high number going over 10+ epochs, the lora will probably end up getting more and more elements fried.
In any case, you can use the number to have a rough idea of how trained/close to frying your lora is. For characters I found that having maybe 6-7 keys scaled for 2 epochs is fine while getting enough contrast and minor details in as well. if it gets in the 15+ the LR is probably too high or I should have stopped it from training sooner.
In picrel the LoRA was pretty much perfectly trained by epoch 7 with 6 scaled keys and there are no major differences after that. But epoch 10 is just as usable because the weights have been scaled back every epoch without allowing them to fry too much.

NTA but thanks for the writeup, I never really understood loss was a helpful, I can get good LoRAs or bad LoRAs and the loss is almost always the same but I'll look at parameters you mentioned on my next train.

I try it out at some point, though what I am watching for is not overtraining but finding the best epoch. I've seen with a lora I trained for many epochs that some later epochs were worse than previous epochs in recognizing what they were supposed to, consistently. Later epochs than that were not as bad. I assumed tensorboard could help me avoid those bad eggs
