I think enlarging the ocean to the left and right would help give us a bit more of a Pacific analog, since atm it's kind of squeezed between the two continents, and also give more space to separate the Northern island from the largest landmass as in this >>66575497 without pushing it into the polar circle. I can make an attempt, just gotta find the version of the map without the texture on the ocean.

Dangerously comfy soundpost. The map does have those inland seas that are all squeezed against mountain ranges on the largest continent. They don't look like much on a .png, but those are huge, they'd probably have sizable harbors. Though it would make sense to want a connection to the world ocean, and there's the Moai polynesian influence you potentially wanna play with.

>Civilization almost exclusively underground, essentially just one surface colony/city and surrounding lands that serves as the face outwards to the rest of the world. Along the mountainous borders, Moai statues dot the rocky surface to signify the borders claimed by /gem/, believed to guard the homeland.
Right
>A mix of sorta mountainous islands, mountains, and some regular mainland surface. Moai statues would be more like irl, closer to the shores and often (I think?) facing towards the ocean.
In either case, the Moai statues would also be scattered around the rest of the landscape. They'd also serve as standing coffins like was discussed some months ago >>55684201

Quick edit. Also played with the south Pole island a bit. This makes the large continent a bit larger than eurasia. Also kept /uuu/ centered on the equator. This would put the north of the North continent about where Alaska/Siberia is in latitude, and the southernmost parts of the South-West continent a few degrees lower than Patagonia. Also makes the larger ocean about 3/4 the size of the Pacific. Version with Earth and lat/lon lines for comparison: https://files.catbox.moe/7uqpwn.png

No, palkyries don’t have many natural defense mechanisms. Back when I first started designing them I tried to make them mostly resemble humans though that might change in this setting even if I’m a bit attached to my creation. I did give them fermentation sacs which some of them have learned to weaponize them by spitting poison or flammable liquid! Other than that they mostly rely on their quiet movement, tail and agility to survive

sorry, i went to sleep after a while. truly unexplainable magic has to be indescribable. harry potter has a soft magic system, but it can be explained because it can be described, even if the explanation is as basic as "emotions and the will of the magic itself makes things work". hard magic systems are systems with a clear explanation, see asimov's definition for hard science, "get the details right and then make changes". our current setting makes both perfectly compatible because even if the soft magic system has an explanation, nobody can really know it without divining how the ai works. your idea of miracles granted by the chuubas is one possible option that exists within our current system that doesn't contradict or invalidate any other kind of magic, hard or soft, and more importantly doesn't break the continuity of the world building setting which everyone in this thread lived in. if the conception of physics changed between each story we tell, that would represent a poor understanding of world building. ultimately, i always believed hard systems were objectively superior to their soft counterparts in terms of writing quality, even seemingly soft magic systems could be explained by hidden variables, and having an entire magic system to explore adds an entirely new dimension of the world to build, you achieve soft magic systems by disregarding all of that and saying "because the story demands it" which isn't world building in my opinion. based on the way we have it right now, the ideas are completely compatible. the only way you could word it for them to not be compatible would be if the idea of an explanation at all to how magic works in this setting was something you didn't like, hence anons question here: >>66577288. you'd have to get rid of any pretense that the magic can be explainable, at which point people are incentivized against exploring how magic works because there is no way to make it fit in the world's setting consistently. right now, even random magic that never follows any clearly definable path has an explanation that makes sense in the same world as everyone else. any effect you could ever want for yourself, and even the mystery behind how it works specifically, is preserved. i don't think you understand how absurd things would have to be to not fit within the current model when even ideas normally viewed as the height of absurdity can be explained. if you have a magic system that follows rules that can be described at all, that magic system can be explained. you couldn't try to subvert it, anything you can possibly think of could be explained as part of the black box that determines how things work in the background. what i don't get is why you wouldn't want something like this, but seeing as how i haven't been here for a while, and that this thread wasn't always so clearly the "worldbuilding" general, i guess the culture has changed this radically in the time i've been away. i forgot to mention it, but my side of the excuse i mentioned at the end of that long comment was multifaceted. whether or not you take my suggestion, you give me an excuse to leave the thread. either you take it, and it becomes exponentially harder to destroy my contributions and the thing that made me interested in the setting for so long, thus i don't need to worry about it being killed off, or you guys don't take my suggestion and decide to destroy it, in which case i don't need to make excuses for why i still care about this thread. nothing would be here for me anymore that my thread couldn't handle for me. all i would bring is misunderstandings and one-sided drama that i always end up getting roped into. clearly i can't stay, i just wanted to see if i couldn't convince people still here to keep up the legacy me and the other chuubanite autists made. it doesn't look like anyone has any questions about the idea itself, just over whether or not the idea being that fleshed out is worth anything, so i'll leave this thread alone now. as i said yesterday, you guys know where to find me if you have any further questions. bye.

They’re possum people so they’re more like rats! Though their behaviors probably resemble dogs more than cats which are the most common animal people in anime
I think it’s both although the former’s more significant and is likely the original reason! I imagine that since we’re in the tropics the temperature difference between day and night is like… day and night, the first palkyries lived in the caves since the environment’s more stable. They’ll start mining deeper once they have to expand living space and find more resources which I think goes well for their craftsmanship culture!
I gave space /vnug/ palkyries sensitivity to sunlight (due to their volatile sun) but I don’t know if I should give them that in this world as well. They might be able to grow fungus and other stuff in the caves but I feel they still need normal farmland to feed themselves

There's always the disclaimer that we can plausibly shift average temperature a couple degrees up or down with the right ice age timing. All else being equal with IRL Earth, there would be less land that is siberia-cold in this proposal, since Russia and Canada are huge but our eurasia is lined up with the equator. I think those blue bits in picrel would be about alaska/siberia tier in this scenario.

Here's my opinion. Personally i'd just lower either of the mountain ranges or separate them enough to form a southern and northern barrier. Second there are too many glacier lake in this area, something like Great Lakes which is bunch of lakes connected to each other shouldn't be that separated. Third for a worldmap, the coastline shouldn't be this jagged atleast not on every coastline for example, northern coast like those of the british isles, norway, and canada have jagged coastline because ice age was a bitch so erosion should be considered. Desu I don't disagree and had the same thought about the coastlines and glacier lakes, but I don't know how annoying it would be to tune the generation to not have those problems, and the alternative is drawing your own damn world elevation map which is a lot of work.
If I took a stab at it I don't think those lakes are analogous to the Great Lakes though, they're way bigger than that. I would guess they're more like the late stages of the Western Interior Seaway (https://deeptimemaps.com/map-lists-thumbnails/western-interior-seaway/attachment/western-interior-seaway-03-wiscretmaa1/)) and will end up drying out over geological timescales as orogeny continues to raise that continent.

Trying to refine the population growth simulation, set things up to be able to export population data so I can know what's actually going on. Looks like my current equations lead to populations massively overshooting their point of equilibrium, eating all the food available, followed by a population collapse as most of the people starve to death. Then, the cycle repeats once the food supply recovers from the famine kek. Seems plausible, but probably shouldn't be the default behaviour.

That's a good point, from what I'm seeing humans don't really do the "long-term planning of population growth rate for sustainability" thing outside of circumstances enforced by some absolute authority, and population centers clearly don't go through continuous cycles of massive starvation death and recovery when there is a point of equilibrium. Modeling some people simply moving out of the region into one with more resources when the food supply starts decreasing would probably prevent that huge spike downward.

Beyond the standard fantasy-esque mushroom farms, what could possibly be farmed underground without access to sunlight?

>> No.66718624

>>66717856
A long time ago I wrote an idea with a Rosebud about sunstones. My idea for sunstones is that they absorb sunlight from the surface. Then they relay sunlight back down underground. I don't remember if it was done through mirror chambers or a network of crystals. Read about Rosestones in the archive.

If that's what you're not looking for then I have a few other ideas. Dwarves in fantasy hollowed out underground farms that have sun roofs on their farms. Dwarves mostly grew potatoes, carrots, grains, and mushrooms. For underground fauna there's cave fish, lizards, insects, and frogs. In the winters you can hunt hibernating animals like snakes, bats, and bears. I think you'll need some access to a little sunlight somewhere at some point. You can also eat roots that grow from the plants above.

>> No.66718951

>>66717856
I also a saw a video about how the underground is a surprisingly good place for pisciculture, since it's relatively easy to flood an underground cistern with water and get a place where you can grow fish without worrying about predators or external illnesses. You would need something to feed them though, probably feed grown some other way.

>> No.66719066

>>66717856
*sniiiiiif* you smell that? That's specbio, and a lot of it

You got any idea what you'd want, first off? we could go the route of mosses and algae, or even expand into strong deep root plants that produce various acids to dissolve rocks and obtain minerals they need that way. Bioluminescence would be a must ofc, so everything would probably stand on the base of some sort of bioluminescent microbes

>> No.66719570

>>66718951
Worms, insects, guano, and some molds would be easy fish food. Also there's can be some crustacean scavengers that can eat guano and mold that the fish can eat. I think there's cave krill and shrimp. Need to look into that.

I suppose having some sort of glowing stones would work, even if it has been done before. I probably should've mentioned I talking about /gem/. Been thinking of splitting up territory based on natural borders and available resources (each with an associated gemstone). [Dots signify larger settlements, red being surface and green subterranean.]

I didn't consider the possibility of fish farms underground. I figured that underground lakes would be still water and full of bacteria or contaminated in some other way.

As you can see the civilization isn't *entirely* underground, but I still want the majority to be. The surface would mostly be for international trade and part of the food production, I guess stuff like potatoes would still be decent for surface farms despite being near the equator thanks to the high altitude and maybe colder climate thanks to it?

>> No.66720969

>>66720509
You're thinking of ponds and resivoirs. Lakes have rivers and streams that fill and drain the lake. As long as you have running water that filters through silt and sand its clean enough to drink. If you don't then you can make a filter out of charcoal and cloth. If you can dry out tree roots then maybe you'll have firewood. Though you're better off lumbering them from the surface. If the region's volcanic then you can get heat from lava springs assuming you have a way of dealing with poison gas.

>> No.66720977

>>66720509
>I figured that underground lakes would be still water and full of bacteria or contaminated in some other way.
Just like there can be stillwater above ground, so it can be underground, sure. But, in order to get there it has to filter through sometimes dozens or even hundreds of meters of rock, so it's actually really pure. Same for underground rivers, and why spring water tastes fucking amazing compared to tap.
As long as you have enough sustenance for the fish, there is no reason they couldn't live underground, tho their eyes might become vestigial. You might not be looking at Tuna sizes, but we do have species of fish that are adapted for that habitat irl as well.

Imagine. Rock candy can be mined underground. It is made from trees infested with a symbiotic lychen that causes it to leak syrupy sap into drops on the roots as storage. The drops dry and harden overtime to become sugar crystal stalagmites and stalagtites. Assuming you don't get animals that eat the sugar stalagmites you can grind the crystals into dust and use them for calcium rich desserts.

I'm sure a civilization that has it at it's doorstep would find ways to develop some way to mitigate it, through strategically placed tunnels and rudimentary pipes or something. Worst case I had an idea of having the society having something resembling a caste society, classless "diggers" included to handle more dangerous hazards and just be expendable in general.

Oh also, ecosystems usually need some source of energy at the bottom of the pyramid. For most life, that's sunlight, which feeds plants, which feed herbivores, which feed carnivores. In a cavern, that source could glowing stones, or just magic energy appearing in some funky mosses, but you could also have the energy come from a geothermal source. That's what ecosystems next to hydrothermal vents do and that's why they're full of life even though they're usually at the bottom of the ocean in the barren abyss. Thought of it since you mentioned volcanism. Of course it can also be a combination of all of the above, or something else. Having everything feed on literal rock sugar is neat too, I vaguely recall something about Biboo's feet tasting sweet.

My stance would basically be that if someone wants to write something about a graduated general, that's cool. And until that happens I guess they exist in a state of Schrodinger's General where they both never existed and existed until observed. I've seen medieval and WW1 be suggested with equal amounts of confidence before, so the answer would be no I guess. If there has to be a proposal, I'd say maybe we go for a style of fantasy where there can be drastically different tech levels without too much problems? Like, in warhammer fantasy you've got your dwarves with tanks and your lizardmen who just ride bigger lizards, but it kinda just works out because regardless of the tech levels everyone seems to be satisfied with their current development level and direction.
If we go for that, I think /morig/ might be like, socially modern, architecturally and militarily gothic, scientifically medieval, with a lot of magic filling in some gaps in quality of life.

So I played around with the map file a bit and I think I have a pretty decent picture of how /vnug/land will look like! It’s a bit ironic considering the old version of /vnug/ but I’ll frame it with seasons:
>“Summer”
This stretches from /VRe/ and /uuu/ border and covers most of the green regions (<1k ft) of /vnug/. It’ll be covered by some kind of tropical forest. It’s relatively small area-wise but most of /vnug/’s border (except the east) will be covered by it.
>“Spring”
This includes the yellow regions (1k~5k ft) which takes up about half of /vnug/’s area. The elevation’s still relatively low (<5k ft) so the temperature’s high enough for trees to grow. The lower temperature means most water in the air will condense and fall here in the form of rain and (more importantly) fog. It’s called cloud forest and I like the dreamy atmosphere it creates! It’s also the most habitable region of /vnug/ due to the comfy temperature and I imagine most above-ground cities will be here somewhere
>”Fall”
The tropical cloud forest stops at the tree line and gives way to mountain grassland with all kinda unusual grass and shrubs. Here the average temperature hovers just above freezing but the temperature varies greatly between day and night. I imagine this is the main region where people live underground so as to avoid said variation
>”Winter”
Glaciers and ice caps! I think it covers about 10% of /vnug/

The Fall area reminds me of ancestral steppe from Monster Hunter 4.

Unfortunately, WAR happened, and the resto was razed to the ground. Aru's gals got scattered and furthermore, he is called in to active duty as a member of The Order, basically a fusion of Avengers and Hololive.

Can they rebuild after the war? I know after Sherman's march to the sea in the US civil war homesteads that were once food centers for everyone in the community got salted into dust where nothing can grow. These homesteads are still barren to this day if they weren't destroyed for public development. I'm pissed off that where I live the ground was salted with lime. Now only weeds can grow in the yard. We'd have to build above ground gardens and buy top soil if we want to grow anything.

Yup, they do. But later, the ReGloss gals get into the Order themselves.

I love a nice cloud forest, that should be perfect for Kokone shenanigans. Being near the equator the influence of actual seasons will be lessened, so that's a nice way to put it.

>>66753674
Ohh, kino. If you have the underwater roots go as deep as the branches reach up, you can get enough space down there to build towns in the intertwined root systems, or to let scary things hide in there, could make for some cool images.
