It's not relevant for every take on this concept but there are differences between a slaveowner who breaks cruel social norms by treating his slaves like servants, and someone who just has servants in a way that is typical for his social class. Both in the possible conflicts to build a story around, and in the perception of the main character because former is more admirable than the second.

I'm happy to call my first new chapter of the new year done. I feel like the past months, holidays and circumstances included, tanked my writing pace as well as some of my creativity. This is a new year though, so I can tackle it with a fresh me and try to meet all the goals I set for myself. I feel like the end of this arc is almost in sight and the amount of pure fluff and other delights waiting at the end is working like a lit powder-keg of motivation for me. It seems they weren't used in that last fight at all, Flare even mentioning that her arrow would kill the guy (tho I'd guess that's more to do with her emotional state).

I was coincidentally looking at that chapter last night since I needed to make sure I got a name I made up back then spelled right. So I made the enchantment because I think it makes sense for a magically inclined society to have something like for their law enforcement, and it's also meant to make Anon and co conscious about if they truly want their blows to be lethal since the enchanted weapon will only draw blood if your emotions/mind calls for it. Anon will wrestle with himself on when it's right to take a life or not several times throughout his journey, and this enchantment on his sword will let him fight his hardest while allowing him to spare his opponents if the situation calls for it. The enchantment itself is more noticeable in later fights and encounters, since I think while I introduced it in the chapter you just finished, I don't remember anyone really making use of it besides Flare, since Anon and Polka were mostly deflecting weapons with their own.
Thanks for reading it by the way and I'm really glad you like Polka. She's so fun to write and her general approach to problems and her friends is probably my favorite of the cast so far.

I think my first impression of this one is the flashbacks could be more seamlessly tied to the next scene they are meant to give the reader some background for. They sometimes feel more like a footnote for the world's history rather than a scene meant to give meaning to the coming actions. The first flashback in this chapter worked a little better than the second, but it might have done nicely with some flair about how Lui was thinking back on that day, or how she's come into her role since then.
I saw a few formatting things upon my first read that needed some attention, but you seemed to have taken care of a few of them already.
You don’t refuse just refuse handed directly by the guild, especially considering they were engaging in black magic - I'm guessing this was supposed to be something along the lines of "You don't just refuse a job handed out directly by the guild"
and
“Alright. If I die to get corrupted somehow, you’ll be the one explaining it to Lui.” she said, holding up the blunt end of her spear to strike - If I die or get corrupted
The overall resolution and sequence of this little quest was interesting, but I think the scenes prior lacked a little oomph to their prose, which sometimes made the reactions being conveyed a little hard to follow. For example there wasn't a mention of Fubuki even touching the skull or Towa to cause her to get afflicted.
A person and their familiar is always a fun angle to explore and flesh out though, so I'll be interested to see where that goes.

Yeah. I think I should relegate it to one flashback a chapter unless the situation is very closely tied into it. I'm still experimenting with how and where I want flashbacks to be and what they contain. I want to give context while still leaving some things up to the readers imagination. It can be a bit of a tricky balance.

I'm excited to finally give Botan and Balsa their due. In Act 2, when Botan will be flying solo for a while, her and Balsa will have a lot of room to play off each other so I hope that'll be as fun for you as for me.

I expected my HHatUSDA thingy to do awfully considering the subject matter (silly BDSM yuri with a suddenly-intruding theological theme that even I didn't see coming, and might have been a mistake) and the level of quality my busy ESL self could achieve, so it did a bit better than expected.

So now that the contest is over. What are some things we can do to make the next one better?
In terms of changes, this contest had two (technically three) things different when it came to setup
>25k Word count limit (initially 50k but reduced in planning)
>Subcategories via genre and even stricter word count limit
and while it didn't seem to do much

The word limit didn't really seem to do much since outside of a few nothing really got near the limit. What did seem to work at sparking fics was the under 5k category since it seemed to encourage shorter fics that otherwise would have gotten overlooked if it was like the first contest.
Meanwhile the subcategories didn't really do much to spark creativity, because outside of the under 5k no one seemed to shoot for any of them (again outside of the one exception).
I'm pretty sure scope creep still fucked up a lot of the authors since I'm reasonably certain not everyone who wanted to compete managed to get their fic done in time.
So, what kind of changes in contest structure should be kept, what changes need to be done, and what changes need to get scrapped in order to make the next contest better?

I think the word count should be slashed again. I was one of the people originally in favor of it being 10k and I stand by that statement especially now considering how popular the 5k category was. In the last contest, Both A Cursed Dagger and By That Sea were under 10k
The categories I'm not so sure on. In the first contest, the SFW/NSFW split to me, felt a bit too narrow. NSFW has the problem however of being equated so smut so votes go out to "which did you find the hottest. For SFW, maybe we should consider what that one Anon said and do awards like "fic that made you laugh" or otherwise just go back to the bipartisan split. Does anyone know how many votes we got during the first contest? cause the category issue could be a timing thing rather than a technical fault.

What I'm wondering is maybe we should just have the contest be once a year? Maybe there wasn't enough time to "recharge" between them.

In order to input your votes, you had to vote in every single category(I think? Or I’m stupid).
Therefore, if I wanted to vote for one of the categories that I didn’t have a story in, I would’ve had to vote in the NSFW category, and thus skew the vote unfairly due to my bias.
I wish I was able to vote in whatever category I chose and abstain from individual categories, so that I could’ve voted in the categories other than NSFW.

We could bump it up to 15k but I'm going to repeat what I said and that authors who want to complete need to go into it with the right mindset. You don't need to write the Ulysses of vtubing. The purpose of the contest is to get people writing and pushing out fresh ideas. If someone can't work in those limitations then I don't know what to tell them. The argument I can see for removing the limit is that we could get more interesting and creative fics like FacelessDegenerates.com or Tower of Tattle. But the 5k category was incredibly popular so the notion that wordcount = bad is just not true.
Another thing I want to bring up is that a smaller word count would be the best for luring in new writers. If there was no limit then anyone could dump a 50k story they have been storing for months right when the contest period opens. With a limit, it at least levels the playing field a bit.

Personally, I think we should just have the Rumble be an annual thing.

That would also be skewing the vote, but against my favor. It’s still subject to bias; it’s deliberately excluding one of the stories from my selections for reasons out of my control. The only way for me to do my best to make the vote completely impartial(which I consider important for the spirit of competition) is to not vote at all.

Okay this might sound convoluted. But how about something like a 'tier system' so 50k full series some anon drops in the middle to compete in a future contest don't fight in the same category as an under 5k cute fluff piece another anon wrote while inspired.
Something like AG (anything goes, full series, twine games, super experimental formats, etc) at the top all the way down to under 5k short fics; with various sub categories in between like under 25k.
As for the rumble, I think it should be at most biannual with the two rumbles being on opposite sides of the calendar. Though I'll concede having only one at most per year will probably be how it goes going forward.

I don't think any story should be excluded from a contest merely because of its length. It's not worth it to have a simplistic "no further or your story is ineligible" maximum word count rule, which limits everyone, just to help keep one or two writers in line - if their story suffers from major scope creep they should either exercise self-control for the contest's sake, or break it up into chapters.
During this contest it was the Under 5k category which ended up being a major driver of submissions, so rather than a maximum word count which seems to lead to discussions rather than fics, wordcount-categories sound like the idea to expand on. Something like Under 1k, Under 5k, Under 10k, Under 20k, Under 50k, Holy Shit

The problem with these solutions is that you run the risk of spreading the entires thin again. Like There Are Days That Last Forever would win the under 50k category single-handedly, for example. I know I wouldn't feel like I won in that scenario.

Maybe have 25k or some other agreed on smaller word count like 10k or 15k as the 'largest constrained' category? Then just let the scope creeped anons decide whether they want to constrain themselves or just submit their big fic under the Anything goes/Holy shit tier.
