Hey guys, dev here.
I want to ask if there’s anyone in this thread who has ever programmed something with rollback netcode before, or even just netcode in general. I’ve been trying to work out how to implement it for my Hololive fighting game for quite a while, but I’ve been unable to grasp or implement the concepts in my work.

My codebase is designed around the idea of rollback netcode, with the game able to function deterministically for however many frames I’d like based on a series of inputs, so long as there’s a set of inputs per player per frame. It, in theory, should be ready made for rollback.

The current idea is to utilize a peer to peer approach similar to Rivals of Aether to avoid unnecessary server cost, and the game is programmed in gamemaker studio 2.

There is a library for implementing ggpo rollback in gamemaker, and that’s what I’ve been trying to figure out, but I’m stuck unable to even get the example project to function locally (it doesn’t even accept input, somehow, and I’m not sure how to make it do that—I’m able to debug and see it hit the input point, but nothing happens on screen).
If anyone knows anything about this, or knows someone who knows anything about this, please let me know. I’m hoping to launch this game with good online without relying on a third party like Parsec.

I see. If gamemaker has a lower level library to let you make and talk to sockets directly, like a wrapper around winsock (I used winsock directly last time I did this sort of thing), then if you get that working you can build from there.
Are you familiar with port forwarding, and automating that with UPnP APis for supported routers, or NAT hole punching? If you're making it truly serverless you can expect some more headaches. If you eventually plan to distribute on Steam, you can use their servers for initial peer discovery and even peer proxying through Valve's relay servers.

Try starting with a simple echo server exercise using the socket API. The goal is to have your server program create a TCP socket (note games typically use UDP, you can switch later), wait until it accepts a connection, wait until it receives some data, then it sends that data back.
The client program, a separate program, tries to make a socket connecting to the server, then it sends some data, then it waits to receive data, and prints out what it received and exits. It should be the same as what was sent.
If you get that working, you might in the process figure out why you haven't had success with other tutorials. But if not, you can at least move on to the more advanced stuff by hand: trying to have the client and server programs talk to each other without being on the same machine or even the same network, learning about UDP vs TCP, having one program able to act as both client and server, and so on.

I have a cousin who was briefly interested in getting into programming. But for some reason he couldn't get Python's pip to work and install libraries needed to get some other code to run. Tried a few suggested things that should have worked, none did. Without being told exactly what didn't work, and without being able to observe exactly what he and his machine were doing, I couldn't help much more. I think he was also disheartened and gave up. Programming probably isn't for him anyway.
Next time you go through the exercise, if it still fails, throw all your code and binaries up somewhere and maybe someone will read it or try to run them. If it works on their machine, but not yours, that at least narrows down some possibilities.
