I know GPTQ and have a Nvidia GPU, and even with more average Nvidia GPUs like mine is it generally running faster then CPU interference. But afaik llama.ccp did a lot of work on GGML/GGUF so maybe that is not even true anymore. I care about speed though, not the made up benchmarks which they showed around at the beginning of the year

Look into oobabooga/text-generation-webui, it is a pretty good interface to test models try out new things.
You don't need to know C++ to run GGUF models.
llama.cpp is a general project that started out as a way for iToddlers to run models on their GPU lacking paperweights but now covers a wide range of models and usecases.
ggerganov/llama.cpp over at github, but if you are using the webui it is as simple as loading the right model.

You can unload pretty much all the layers onto the GPU with llama.cpp. I was running 4bit quantized 7B Llama models on my 4GB laptop and llama.cpp was more stable for me.
I forgot what performance diferences had between 4bit GPTQ and at the time GGML.
