For most popular Holos, all you need to do is literally sort out the top 10 most subbed ranking (contra your assertion that ranking Nijis would only be possible this way). In Niji things are much more distributed. Kenmochi easily has one of top live viewers and multiple singing gigs and corporate sponsorships despite 300k subs. Kaede has anisong gigs despite 400k subs and fairly low live viewers. There are <400k subs Nijis with live concerts, music record contracts, and/or high live viewers.

In the VTuber community, even if you are only tangentially connected to it, you will recognize Hololive and would be able to answer at least 60% of the question with accuracy and the remaining 40% they'll be able to answer to some degree of accuracy. Of those questions, the last one is the most important one, because everyone will be able to answer with the same five people out of a bunch of like maybe ten different ones (i.e. Gura, Pekora, Marine, Korone, Fubuki, Rushia, Mori, Ame, Ina, Moona). Notice that the order in which they place them is irrelevant, but their presence in media is the most important factor to determine how popular they really are overall. Even more so, the fact that they constantly collaborate with each other makes all Holos generally recognizable to the audience, with the only big exception being Gura since she has a branding problem that is more Cover's failure to integrate her into the group than anything involving her (you should know that if you're hiring introverts to do an extrovert's job, you will need to encourage said introvert to try to be more extroverted, but Cover's management hasn't realized this and their corporate culture doesn't help them).

You hardly have this effect with Nijisanji due to the large amount of people that they have on roster, the chuubas looking largely same-ish (in the wrong way) and the fact that they normally don't collab outside of their select group of people. Their main issue isn't that they're reclining, it's more that they're stagnant since they may have hit the cap of how mainstream a medium like vtubing can be in Japan. It's a pretty high cap but a cap nonetheless hence why international expansion is important for them right now. Holos being overly concessive and dependent to schizo fans disillusioned me from Holo after a year of being an exclusive Holo-only hako oshi. I think idolfagging and even GFE is only a part of it though, a significant part of it involves superchat culture where a small number of schizos controlled Holos through massive donations (akasupas every stream etc.) and therefore controlled daily streaming content. The Official Nijisanji account only posts a megathread in there for official events and such and that doesn't happen much. I think that's what it all boils down to. I'm not sure if I read it here or somewhere else but there was a post that described Japanese (and asian mentality to some extent) and how different it was to the west. The Japanese tend to apologize for the smallest shit because they value saving face and basically trying to end the argument and moving on as quickly as possible. The west seems to be not only allergic to apologies but somehow has nurtured an environment where apologizing for something that you did gets you in a worse situation.
