Way too many members. I used to like nijien back when they were way fewer members and everyone felt just as important. Nowadays it feels like only a couple of them are the important ones and the rest just fade into the background. If you're a fan of one of the least popular members, you just end up feeling like an outsider in the fanbase.
I don't know if this is the reason for their "downfall", but it's at least one of things that drove me away from niji en.
