Anon, just because two languages share the same writing system does not mean that they will be similar languages. For example, English and French both use the Latin alphabet, but English is a Germanic language and French is a Romance language.
Korean and Japanese both used Chinese hanzi as their original writing systems, but both of those languages exist entirely isolated from Chinese in their origin and lineage (they are Koreanic, Japonic and Sino-Tibetan).

Ukrainian and Russian are descendent from the same lineage but Cyrillic has nothing to do with that.

Another example: the Czech language is a South Slavic language, part of the same Balto-Slavic family as Ukrainian and Russian (East Slavic). That means there are fundamental similarities between Czech and the other two, but Czech is written in the Latin script, not Cyrillic.

By your understanding of languages, you'd sooner compare Czech to German instead, despite it being from a completely different branch of the Indo-European languages.
