After the Fatman fight, I think an issue I have with MGS2 is that it takes too long to get the main plot going. Metal Gear is a retarded concept anyway and it undermines any attempts to make the series 100% serious. Why does a nuclear platform need to be a dinosaur with heavy firepower? It will be thousands of kilometers away from target. It needs to be stealthy and as hard to find as possible. The biggest danger to it will always be saboteurs and the best weapon against that are a human regiment, mobility and stealth anyway. A robodinosaur is pretty far from that. You know what's hard to find? A submarine in an ocean. You know what else would be hard to find? A cargo wagon attached to a train in the vast American plains or Siberian forests. Soviets actually made that shit. But you can't make a cool fight against that even though those fights only serve to further undermine Metal Gears as "superweapons".

REX is new technology who's main engineering problem is the weight of the payload, it's not actually intended for fighting in AP role and using it that way would genuinely turn into a dorky boss battle, particularly if the moron in control of it decided to activate it while it was still indoors. Oh, I didn't know that part. That's a cool detail. But the way the game(in fact, 1-3 are similar too) in general is structured still undermines metal gears a lot. They're never THE boss. What happens in 1? You beat the big robot, a dude gets out of it and that's the real fight. Similarly, in 2 and 3 though the real boss there is completely separate from the mech. 3 also twists it a bit because you fight the pilot and then the Shagohod. Revengeance makes it worse both times you face Metal Gears. First time you face Sam who's not even a full cyborg and he completely destroys Raiden after Raiden pretty much toys with Ray. Second time, a fucking politician gets out of the destroyed metal gear and beats the living and cyborg shit out of Raiden with little effort. It's not just gameplay(any boss can be perfected, that's just how games are), it's how the game frames the fight. I can perfect Isshin in Sekiro within a few tries but he's still the Sword Saint and the coolest guy in the game. Same can never be said about Metal Gears.

Mori's problem was she was getting swamped by trash. She was constantly getting hit by the random missile mechs. Once she switched to a weapon that was able to take them out efficiently and got a lighter build, she did much better.

Flamethrower is insanely good for that mission. It's absolutely useless against pulse shields or at longer range but nothing in that mission uses shields and it's a pretty small arena. For some reason, Flamethrower in AC6 is the most cost-efficient flamethrower in videogames I've seen. You can run dry in that mission with gatlings or shotguns but flamethrower? You can easily finish the mission with 2/3 of the tanks left.

I guess that's just the side effect of MGS games being character driven, where ending the game on the destroying a giant metal death machine (even if the title of the seires is it's namesake) would feel kinda "flat" I suppose

Even MGR is a kinda guilty of this where, instead of ending after Raiden blows up Metal Gear Excellus, it end after you kill Armstrong (who hilarious gets built up in the final 20 or so minutes of the game because you don't actually meet him until the final mission kek)

I feel like one of games could actually convey their danger if we saw them excel at what they're intended to do - launch a nuke while defending against conventional attacks. But that means you need to redesign them completely to be believably effective AND raise stakes too high because that would mean a nuke landing somewhere AND then somehow explain how Snake disables that thing when previous attacks failed. Ironically, I think Deathstar is a better design - as absurd as it is, at least there's a very clear purpose to it and you can't say "but a plane/sub can do the same thing better!"
