This isn't a "hobby" for Shigure Ui. Vtubing is her full time job. The freelance artist thing is just her gimmick because her in to the vtubing industry was Subaru's design, which was one of the very few freelance art jobs she took.

She was a freelance artist for about a year and half before she quit to be a streamer. She makes all her money off merch and corporate deals, the same as the Hololive JP girls.

Her wiki page says she used to work for a game developer and she very recently did cover art for some books. You don't get to her level of polish by doing art as just a hobby. Also I don't think she's ever done a sponsored stream before; she does merch because she wants merch.

I've never known anime illustrators to make all that much money even if they're reputable, so I have my doubts that it's her main career path. Quite simply, she can make much more money in vtubing easily. She also streams way too little for the actual vtubing to be her main source of income, it's not like she's Ayame who has a legion of men willing to support her doing nothing.

My guess is that she does production-side contract or consultation work behind the scenes in the vtubing industry as her main job, and her channel serves as both a networking tool and portfolio. Or she somehow got so much money off designing Subaru that she doesn't need a main job at all.

No, you get her level of polish by working for a professional company as an artist for almost 10 years. She's in her mid-30's. The English language Wikipedia page is not the best source of information for her. She literally has a portfolio with all her professional work, barely anything is past 2020.

Yes, she has had some work recently, these aren't artist for hire jobs. Those are corporate advertising jobs. The fact that famous vtuber Shigure Ui drew a picture is heavily shilled for those products by both her and the client. She isn't getting hired or paid on artist rates.
