I have watched popular vtubers do lengthy streams to attract no new followers, or donations.
I would have to guess for growth it might be better to play a game like Minecraft. Minecraft, and maybe Fortnite.

I've watched gael play RimWorld, fallout 4, and Morrowind. None of those streams were necessarily bad.
Gael kicked ass in fallout 4. I'm not very knowledgeable on RimWorld, but I got a chance to see the game that was trending for a little while.
As for Morrowind I learned how to train axe skill. I never trained axe skill myself. At least not much, but after that stream I managed to use what I learned from Gaels stream to get my hand to hand skill up 100.
A streamer doesn't have to have a good marketing team to produce quality streams that are both educational, and entertaining.

Can I ask an honest question to /here/? Why do the numbers matter so much? I know some streamers genuinely do it as a hobby and sincerely don't have an interest in "ascending" or "stagnating", they're just happy to have an audience to hang out with while they do their little tasks. I know some people are very numbers-driven, but that seems exhausting to me personally. When does it end? When are the numbers big enough? But that's only my view, and I'd be interested to hear the opinions of others.

As a certified NGMI who does it out of the joy of streaming, numbers definitely matter to some people in terms of whether or not they even interact with you in any regard. (and I do get it, if you do this as business then spending your time on pointless "ventures" causes you to waste time and energy)
There's also the fact that numbers will always be your #1 source of feedback. People might give you feedback via some form or mashus every now and again but you'll always have your numbers after every stream as a source of letting you know whether you did "good" or "bad". No matter how much of a hobbyist you are, that feedback still matters and pretending that it doesn't means you're lying to yourself.
