I feel a bit nervous about approaching this new entity myself, but I'm quite done with being played like a fiddle by the old woman.

I think it was brought up before before but I never realized Kiara talking about Phoenix mating wasn't that far off from historical accounts.

The old woman just nods. You go around the right side of the hill, more mules packed with cargo coming into view - most of them are clearly carrying the grain you saw being harvested in the hamlet. The mules seem strangely calm and silent, either manipulated by or used to the strange creature using them.
As you come closer, the cloaked figure turns around to face you. You don't see any face or other physical features, and you're not sure if that's just because it's a dark being and a cloudy night. A voice, thin and not seeming to come from any direction in particular, speaks to you.
"Have you come to pay the Tribute of all Colours properly after all, peasant? What you have brought so far might not be enough..."

The figure's cloak starts to flutter, despite the air being as calm as it could be.

The voice pauses for a moment as the cloaked figure sways from side to side. Then it continues, suddenly sounding more smug and confident than omnious.

I squint to try and distinguish any feature under the hood. "do you like know me?"

Since you look intently at the figure you immediately notice its sudden shift in shape. The cloak and what was under it combine and almost instantly transform into a large, vaguely round form made of shadow, smoke, darkness or something similar. Its only features are two large eyes above a gaping maw. As it stares at you, you feel a pull to towards the creature that grows stronger and stronger.
"Don't resist, foreigner."

You try to resist despite the creature's words, but you keep sliding closer and closer towards its darkness no matter how hard you try to go somewhere else or stand still. You could try to continue resisting to delay your arrival at the creature's maw, or you could try a desperate attack. Your only relief was the glow of Shion's magic already manifesting on top of the hill, and a glimpse of a white-robed figure moving in behind the creature.

I almost fall and stumble forward, but despite my efforts I see my feet slipping on the dirt. My hands both reach into my silken brown hair and pull a pair of twin daggers out of the locks. Desperately, I drive the magical daggers deep into the ground, hoping to stake myself against the strange force.

You do your best to hold onto the daggers that are now firmly stuck in the ground, but your left hand slips from its dagger. You desperately grip the other dagger with both hands, but are still slowly losing grip. The voice is much louder in your head now, and - unsettlingly - shrill and sonorous at the same time.
"It's no use. You will become one with me...with us."
Suddenly, a purple barrage of light bolts down the hill. The hideous monster is caught completely off-guard, its eyes widening as the incoming threat...flies past it and against a tree, felling it instantly.
"NEEEEEE, my foot! 90% hit chance my ass!"
The voice erupts in laughter.
"HAHAHA, such a PATHETIC AMBUSH! I AM THE GREATEST OF MY REALM. YOU ALL WILL...AHH!"
The monster's ill-advised gloating is cut off by a white light flooding the clearing directly behind it, touching its backside.
"You will not hurt this guest of mine, nor will you haunt these lands ever again."
The old woman's robe seems to shine like the sun - but only for a moment. The light quickly dims as she seems to enter into the shadowy monster from behind.

The monster suddenly increases its pull on you in an erratic fashion in what might well be a last, desperate move.

As my knuckles separate themselves from the handle, one by one, my years of video game training surge within me, and an idea shows itself.
I use what leverage I have left to pull the remaining dagger out of the ground, freeing it, then use the attractive force to jump towards the monster. My dagger is pointed forwards, I'm aiming to stab its eye.

You lunge at the monster desperately as it opens its maw even further, emitting an omnious multi-colored radiance and a screeching that rings in your mind. You plunge your dagger deep between its maw and its eyes in an attempt at mutual devastation, encountering more and more resistance as you cut deeper and deeper - but that does not stop you. And yet the monster is still there, its maw's radiance surrounded by darkness swallowing you as your consciousness is slipping away...only to be washed back inside of you by an sudden flash of light, a burst so bright that both the darkness and the faceted radiance of the monster dissappear - and do not return.
You fall and stumble to the ground only for Shion to catch you, helping you to stand. Uncharacteristically, she seems to be at a loss for words.
Still on the ground lies an old woman, her robe as grey as her face.

I look around for any trace of the monster, until my eyes land on the motionless form of the old lady.
"ah eh, madam? uhhh, sorry for mistrusting you and all, i guess you didn't make up all that "darkness maw and shining light" stuff... hey are you okay?" I proceed to approach her cautiously.

I'm glad I could make it all up to you, foreign lady. Hopefully you find your stuffs, and where these goods were meant to be taken away to. As the woman closes her eyes Shion stops supporting you and rushes to her side, leaving you shaky on your legs for a moment before you catch yourself. Shion mumbles some words and a magical circle form over the old woman's heart, spinning before vanishing again.
"Neee...I can't do anything for her. Her robe absorbed some of the evil shadow, but most of it she took into herself to neutralize it. A frail ha-old person like her can't survive that."

I look around and catch sight of the mule. Oh...

"Well, I can tell you from the symbols on these bags that they're meant for the Twothree, the grandest and most beautiful ship that ever anchors at the harbour near here...but this "tribute" must be collected late, because that ship has already sailed! I saw it out at sea from my broom. But I'm pretty sure there's no need to go anywhere, eh! Your stuffs should still be here since the other stuffs, I mean the other things from the village are clearly still here. Just look at all that grain..."
You and Shion search the eerily calm mules' cargo, and after a minute you find all your stuffs as you had last seen them.

As you apply the kit to the dark grey robe relentlessly, results are slowly showing themselves: The robe grows lighter in areas where you have attempted to remove the stain. Over time it slowly darkens again, but as it does the unconscious woman looks less and less grey, more and more sleeping than dead. Shion kneels down next to you, observing your progress in amazement.
"Anya-chan, that's amazing! I didn't know you had such powerful artifacts in your possession. Surely you'll allow your senpai to study them sometime, ehe?"
After your stain-removal kit grows so black that it stops working, you take a look at the old woman. She seems somewhere between a deep sleep and unsconsciousness, but you have high hopes that she will wake up again.

At last, with my stuffs safe back with me, and no one on the verge of death, the adrenalin leaves my body and the day's tiredness hits me all at once.
"gosh... let's eat some cheese from those bags before we get going, I'm starving..."
I look around the hilly meadow for a bit, searching. "shion-chan, did the weirdo black thing leave nothing behind? ela will laugh at me when i tell her about this, she'll think i just dreamed it."

You eat and look around the place, but the only thing the monster seems to have left behind is a blackened, now-unreadable plaque.
Shion gives it a suspicious look.
"Whatever that is, it looks thoroughly tainted...you can keep it if you want."
You use the mules to transport the old woman, the grain and everything else back to the village. The inhabitants are worried about their matriarch and carefully put her in the nicest bed they have before profusely apologizing to you for their deception out of need. Shion wasn't deceived by them, but is angry with them anyway.
"Me and Anya saved you from that monster despite your cowardly, thieving behavior! Apologizing is nice and all, but you should really kiss our feet because we two great heroines saved all your stuff and the day with our courage and our amazing powe- NEEEE, I didn't mean that literally! Disgusting!"
The villagers proceed to thank the two of you on their knees while remaining at a respectful distance. It seems like all will be back to normal soon, at least in this tiny hamlet near the sea...

I ponder the latest addition to my stuffs, this small black plaque. It does have this cursed vibe, but I'm too curious to just leave somewhere without looking into it at all, maybe I can find someone more knowledgeable in, uh, hungry masses of darkness... Maybe not... Guess it's a nice souvenir at least.
The good news is that the village was appropriately appreciative, the meal tonight was equal to the one I had at the castle in quantity, though not in quality lol.
I guess I can finally enjoy a comfy village vacation for some time now...

Thank you for playing! Good timing too, because this is about the right spot to end the adventure for me (you can continue if you want, of course - it's your story as much as mine). We didn't get to explore the ship because it was too late too reach it, but everything to do with the baron was added improv so the adventure didn't end up shorter than I expected. It's definitely easier to gauge the other's assumptions and preferences when playing with people you know and I was worried we'd get bogged down after too much time without progress, but we ended up getting to the bottom of the mystery in an organic-enough way. That you didn't use skills against the niji monster almost cost the old woman her life, but since you managed to save her through creative stuffs use it just made the plot better.

The story itself feels like it'd be a fic from the writing general rather than "lore" for the actual Anya, but I guess it was in RPG form so it belongs here regardless.

I don't feel like their debut lore restricted them noticeably. The new version reads a bit smoother though, the previous ones were a bit wordy.

Restriction or no, they didn't really do anything with it. It was a waste of resources and a missed opportunity. Not even the awkward "Council Meeting" group collabs led to any substantial developments; they involved close to zero "we're a council that manages the universe" kayfabe because...what would they even do talk about? Just imagine if they had been given more leeway with their lore and their group collabs: They could've made something more appropriate for the vtubing medium, something they'd actually want to build on and just something more interesting in general. That they just had their lore rewritten and the "council" concept removed is itself proof of how the company didn't have any ideas for it and of how the girls didn't like it.

But let's also look at an example, a glimpse of what could have been. Fauna's old lore said:
>A member of the Council and the Keeper of "Nature," the second concept created by the Gods. She has materialized in the mortal realm as a druid in a bid to save nature.
But Fauna's lore video for her mascot Nemu heavily implied that Fauna used to be an evil witch who stole the "Keeper of Nature" position from a princess - a princess who Fauna lured into the forest and turned into her new pet, the deer-like Nemu. She just gave herself a way more interesting backstory that clearly contradicts what some hack had written for her character backstory way too early. Let chuubas build their own lore, they're the ones who have to think most about it and have to be willing to use it in the end.

But it goes beyond that, I think. Even disregarding the whole vtubing aspect and just thinking of them as characters inside of stories...what could the "Speaker of Space" say to the "Guardian of Civilization" at a "Council Meeting" that sets up to something interesting? I'm sure you could come up with something, but you can't tell me that it's easy.

Cover's restrictions are far more autistic, with stuff like "you can't change your hair color" kek. I think the reason the holos don't really develop their lore much besides offhand remarks that respond to chat messages is that it just isn't really a priority compared to their other duties.

even those weekly council meetings are very shortterm if you have other streams to plan over the week
the idea of a council of the universal laws sounds great on paper and is likke a chuunis dream, but either building with what comes liek watson and the time travel stuff or slowly play into it over time as you want it to pan out like Onolumi for example clearly wworks better for the medium and it also makes the viewers feel involved.
as a viewer those councilmeeting always felt super awkward because it didn't really feel liek something for the viewers
