They know the series is partially famous because of Kojima's fondness for the West, so my guess is the higher-ups at Konami thought it would make sense to promote whatever it is with someone who has some Western appeal as well. That and I think Mori did mention wanting to play MGR at some point so the interests overlap at least on some level.
