Assuming generic merch is less then a superchat cut (35% has never been confirmed, just assumed likely), it could still easily be 20% or 30% which is still very significant, far from not worth anything. Again the bulk of the merch they sold when she made that statement was the custom birthday and anniversary merch. The rollout of more frequent generic merch happened afterwards.
All of this is ignoring Kson stating that she used to complain about a 50% cut on merch. That statement makes zero sense if she spent the bulk of her career getting a less then 35% cut, and suggests she at least at some point has gotten a higher then 50% cut on merch. Not really just using the words of the talents themselves. YouTube takes a 30% and it's assumed that the rest is split 50/50 between cover and the talent. If you want to assume that cover takes even more than that, well, you're free to do so but that's not exactly great.
And ah the kson case, kson shortly after that statement made a stream where she was bragging about the changes in her current contract including the merch. Vshojo taking 50% of the merch cut is actually fairly reasonable to assume since that's literally the only way they make money. Vshojo has on record stated multiple times that they do not take anything from the talents outside of merch cuts. It's pretty likely she was referring to vshojo because she kinda tries to avoid ever mentioning anything about her time in hololive.

And yes the 2% figure came from a dramatuber, no multiple Nijis haven't spoken out about it. Mysta made a joke on stream about it and the illiterate ESLs of SEA assumed it was true. Outside of mysta's joke there exists a reply in Japanese made by kuzuha back in 2018 or 2019 when the company was first starting out about how little his merch made him.
This tweet could have been fact, it could have been a joke, it could have been anything in between because the response he replied to was deleted and on top of that the company has gone through major changes since then. 2018 and 2018 were actually pretty rough for nijisanji, the majority of the graduations in nijisanji happened in that time period and there were a few different reasons for it honestly.

A: nijisanjis style of vtubing was seen as lazy to some, people compared them to others like Kizuna Ai and Kaguya Luna who had full 3d body tracking and performed large skits and etc to the stiff live 2d avatars that were used by nijisanji and weren't impressed at first.
B: vtubers were still pretty niche. There were only a handful and the ability to become a vtuber was inaccessible for most due to the crazy cost of the equipment that had become associated with vtubers of that era
C: the company didn't really have much to offer outside of a promise that one day it might get big.
