Here's the actual reason: VShojo is nothing like Hololive, while actually competing on a level similar to them. That's why so many numberfags flee to JP or event numbers where VShojo can't compete, because having to admit that a Western company is at a level very similar to their own without any of the restrictions and a good deal more freedom shouldn't work. The fact that it would be a preferable place for someone like Henya to wind up over their favored group has made them seethe enough to make daily Henya seethe threads for 6 months now. They're still winning, but they don't want VShojo to have a place at the table period.

Also VShojo can't be bullied as easily as Niji, since Niji's ACCELERATE method of hiring and debuting means that they get a shitload of medium-big streamers instead of a small honed group of huge streamers.

I think it's bias that stuck since early days. Initial hololive fans were very I guess? They were heavy idolfags, into japan and hated the idea of west copying it. If someone in the west makes an anime, that would trigger some of the weebs, same here. Not everyone was happy about hololive En, though it's the most extreme ones.
Now enter Vshojo, western vtubing agency, having an actual sex worker in their ranks (+ at the time, everyone was coombaiting, even if it's not true now, they had reputation of whores for a reason). It was the most opposite thing from hololive. That and common tribalism.

Best of luck to both of us! I'm about a month and 14 units deep in Duolingo's Japanese course. Just don't marry yourself to it. If you find you can understand beginner-level media in your target language and you could be learning new words faster by reading or watching shows in the language and looking up words you don't recognize (and maybe making flash cards of them), you can probably just do that and leave Duolingo behind.
(I'm not at that point myself yet, but I try for at least an hour of Duolingo a day, plus a slow Japanese podcast for listening practice.)

Not really. Niji can be a bit restrictive sure, but you're going to see a hundred Niji/Indie collabs before you see 1 Holo/Indie collab. They very much have a walled off approach to vtubing. And VShojo's open enough to have no walls at all, while most other corpos are small enough to not be able to afford a wall.

And the only reason it's split like that at all is because Holo's so big. If they were mid-sized then separating them would be ridiculous.

I don't recommend relying too much on Duolingo(unless it's spic, they prioritize improving their spic lessons way more than other languages). Their Japanese course legitimately sucks at teaching grammar and proper pronunciation, they roll out new kanji at a painfully slow rate when it's essential.
You should always have multiple resources, download PDFs of Tango N1-5, Genki and Remembering the Kanji, watch Tokini Andy and Tae Kim. Try the Wanikani free trial to drill in basic kanji and then use Anki flashcards.
In terms of whether you should be learning kanji in order of simplicity or in order of common usage the answer is: both at the same time. Wanikani and RTK's order helps you understand radicals and stroke order so you have a faster time picking up new kanji and getting an idea of what unfamiliar characters and words mean before you even learn them. At the same time learn new words and sentenced from JLPT N5 and Kanken 10 mock tests and move up from there.
You can learn any moonroon language in the same way though you'll have the hardest time picking up Chinese because it's extremely context heavy with each syllable having different pronunciation. Pronouncing things the wrong way can lead to completely different words, see: the Shi poem(it actually made me appreciate the 3-alphabet system Japan has, it's a lot more practical than you might think)
