Yeah, that's the hard part of self-study, even if it's more efficient than classes in all other areas. I think revisiting the ones focused on exercise like genki would be the most beneficial but it sounds like you're lost on some grammar context so maybe a quick read of more theoretical one would be ideal first.
You could also try checking if there's some private tutor in your area but that can be pretty expensive, so not for everyone. However it should be an easier obstacle to pass than looking for and talking up to strangers online, at least in my eyes.

The thing with grammar books is, you won't understand them fully on your first read, no matter what. It will be more like you get 20% on first try when your JP is barely starting, then you read it again after you already finished core or equivalent and started reading simple manga/VN, now you understand like 50% of that basic grammar book, you read some more media, now you almost get everything that was in the basic grammar guide and start branching out to more advanced concepts. Don't be afraid of looking into guides you already covered.
I think Tae Kim would be the best option to check out first because unlike most grammar books which just go one subject after another, it focuses on explaining how Japanese grammar is fundamentally different from English. It's quite likely you already read it in the past but if it was only once, I think a re-read could help a lot. And if if you never read it, you absolutely should.
