Unfortunately that's what it is if you try to use civil law contracts in place of employment law contracts. It could get even worse for Kawaii, since the obligations of the talents were very employee-like, potentially even exposing them to fiscal sanctions for unpaid social insurance.
If anything is stupid it's not employing people as actual employees if you expect them to behave like that, especially in EU countries.

Not unreasonable. I wouldn't be surprised if <big corporation>'s slaves were signed up as independent contractors so that they don't have to provide any kind of employee protection. Turbo capitalism is so bad.

It's the form of contract they chose. Even with all employee protections in some of the more restrictive jurisdictions, you still get a whole lot of control over your workers, like obligatory overtime (still paid though) and strictly regulating how and when work is to be performed, that you don't with contractors.
