Subs is a good proxy because, because of this long term relationship, there is usually a direct correlation between the number of people a streamer "captivated" across the time and the size of their paying audience.
It is not a "causal" relationship tho, let alone a "direct proportional" one and, once again, Ollie 2021 proves both points.

Most girls on Hololive with a big subscriber count also bring a big revenue but mostly because they captivated that audience through a long period of time.

I am not dismissing that, just making an important point that subs count and subs growth are a KPI because they signal the sign of the potential paying audience but if that “potential” doesn’t manifest in reality it doesn’t carry a lot of meaning.
About “sponsorship and shilling shit”, specially for Hololive, there is no direct relation between subs count and opportunities otherwise Choco and Aki (to give two examples) wouldn’t be in so many of the recent and past initiatives in that matter.
