Well, the company incentivizes it by giving members a reward at 1 million but I do wonder how many of them actually take it seriously. Because the ones who got 1 million through no effort don't take it seriously at all and treat it dismissively as their numbers continue to grow and the ones who take it super seriously take ages to get the number and their audience never actually grows through that time so even though they feel relief at hitting a million, they are still not popular.

The people at the very top of the company don't have to ask for subs because they are already perceived as being at the peak of vtubing despite the fact they are tiny channels on Youtube generally. Sub totals are very relevant in that sense, Hololive does have a few numberfags at the top that also have the most numbers but momentum will always keep them there, at least in the relative short-term. People who joined later need to numberfag harder if they ever want to "catch up" and be seen as equals even if they are actually more popular currently. Honestly, the more interesting metric to compare everyone and have it be accurate in the ways subs never are would be if they were measured on who has the most members from month to month but they can't do that because it's too explicitly mask-off.
