It was a chill read, I liked how the scenes were described and each of the characters has their own charm. About the story, I liked the ending, never felt much empathy for Lenny desu, kek. Also, I still didn't get the "glove fulla vaseline" thing

The only thing I would want to complain about that I feel there was too much backstory (about the family and town) so I felt the story was slowly unfolding and when they finally reached the underground city everything happened so quickly and ended abruptly.

I'm used to reading things that are different in style that this was a little hard to get into, even though it was short I had to keep going back to check earlier parts and keep notes. The mental image I got from it was a little overwhelming in parts and I couldn't naturally form one with that as well as I can with some of the other things I read.
Still, no matter how much I braced myself for the name of the silly cat, I think I giggled to myself every time it came up. Also I sort of wish there was more to the end, it was pretty sudden, I think I follow along with what happened, but I do wish it was a little more drawn out and not just "family bad I'm crazy now I will eat the man" Or at least I believe that's what they're hinting at it being, thought it could have totally been cosmic interference. Not bad for my first Lovecraft though, I'm looking forward to maybe reading more.

It was pretty interesting, game me a good example of "IM GOING INSANEEE" when the rats were in the walls, but they weren't. Made me feel kinda schizo as you got the perspective of someone sensing signs of somethings existence that no else can detect, and the only compatriots in your insanity are a bunch of brainless cats giving you support that what you're sensing is real but simultaneous doubt that maybe you're just fucking insane forcing you to try and come to the truth
One thing I don't really get and would like some anons thoughts on is the ending scene in the underground grove, what was that place? There were descriptions, but I'm not sure I really understood everything perfectly. Was it just some thousands of years old slave chamber where a bunch of humans just kept another group of people under ground, and the enslavement of these people was miraculously maintained by every new coming ruler over the years until recently where one guy was good enough to end the chain, allowing these slaves to evolve into weird subhumans from thousands of years of isolated breeding? What was the actual supernatural stuff? The endless pits? I feel confused by it all

Of Mice And Men
I hadn't read this before and was immediately charmed by the way Steinbeck described scenes. What really had me smiling to myself was the the way the characters' accent was not just assumed, Steinbeck wrote out the words the way someone from that part of america would say them. I could actually imagine what George and Lennie looked like after being described. I could literally imagine the scene as if it was a movie, that's how well Steinbeck's style worked for me. Especially the scene where Curley's wife first appears felt reminiscent of scenes I had scene in older movies. If the book was a bunny I would pet it. Sadly it's a pdf so I can only rate it a 8/10

Rats in the Walls
I had actually not only read this before multiple times, I had helped a friend write an essay on it for her course in uni. The essay sadly focused on the notion that the story might be an allegorical criticism of the first world war. I don't want to believe Lovecraft would feel the need to cloud his opinions in allegory, he wrote a treatise on cats being better than dogs. No, I believe this is just him writing cosmic horror with the tool of compressing human history by way of describing the underground ruins and then juxtaposing all that extremely long time of different human civilisations with the more than ancient eldritch thing his ancestors had been thrall to. This is the real terror, that below all the great history of humanity, that terrible threat had always loomed over us.
Also cat name etc. Lovecrafts writing style itself isn't anything to write home about, but if anything, the clear no-nonsense style lends credence to the notion of this actually being a real report on an event that had happened to some poor guy. Definitely read up on Cybelle, the magna mater mentioned in the story. It's /d/ as fuck. 7/10

I was surprised by how much I liked Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck's ability to paint a picture with his words was super impressive and I kind of wish it was longer so he would have had more chances to describe the landscapes like in the beginning. I took notes as I was reading it since I checked out a copy from the library that I had to turn back in a few weeks ago, and even if most of it was basic bitch intro to literature class tier analysis, the central theme of society just tossing out things when they're no longer useful really stood out to me, especially considering the book was written/set during the Depression. 8.5/10 would read more Steinbeck. I liked Rrats in the Walls well enough, but as far as Lovecraft goes I think it's one of his weaker stories. Yeah it's way shorter than some of his other ones so the pacing is better, but I think the way Lovecraft kind of rambles on in his larger stories adds to the whole feel of his work. Like in this story when Delapore was going insane and ranting about Nyarlathotep, Lovecraft did a great job of writing like a crazy person would think. 7/10 I would raise herds of human cattle to feed my cannibal wife Shiorin and our pet Shiggermen.
