I'd recommend not worrying too much about understanding every word. I've been reading untranslated VNs for years but when I started I would understand almost none of the words and didn't even try to understand every word. Instead I learned the words more by frequency of appearance. If I see a word appearing all the time then I would go and see what it means. Or if I was really curious about some particular sentence. This approach worked well for me with the only real downside being that you don't understand a lot of what's being said and often get lost in the first few months, but it was still a lot of fun. It's possible to keep up with what's happening even if you only understand maybe 10% of what's being said, especially in the case of a VN where the lines are voiced and you have a lot of context to work with. Or an anime with Japanese subtitles. Manga is okay too except you'd lose the voiced lines so get stumped on kanji more often since it isn't read out loud.
