I never understood why people rib Mori for her lyrics She really writes very colorful and creative image-provoking lines. Maybe it's a background thing because I spent my youth on metal and rock and shit like that is not unusual.

I'm not gatekeeping metal with "must have an actual band with real guitars" even though that's my real preference because more people are more welcome, especially if it's Mori. It's also not realistic at this stage and a good song is a good song. Would be nice though.

I'm liking your read but I'm going to offer another perspective on L4DL. If you approach it as a follow up on EoaL I think it ties the whole song together and cements it as her best song yet (for my money anyway). EoaL is an extremely sad song but in a wistful and controlled way, almost stoic with how she scolds herself for feeling the way she does when she should "be glad [she's] got it made." Even the track is very cool, calm and collected. L4DL by comparison has this dramatic ballad backing lyrics that are openly grieving simpler times, crescendoing with her practically screaming "I'm a traitor, I'm a fraud, no one is going to miss me and I'm going to deserve it." It's a fucking beautiful song on a beautiful EP.

YNS is pretty much the only song I'm still iffy about. It has my usual gripes: disjointed melody and overprocessed vocals saying I can't tell what until I see the lyric sheet. I'm sure there's a good song behind it all if I dig into it, but I don't know if I'll be willing to put in the effort.
On the other hand, when the Lullaby comes straight after it on spotify, it's such a breath of fresh air I like it even more than I already did. The lyrics come through so clearly and they're set to this beautiful melody, it's fucking great.

I'm not saying this is a good excuse, but the mindset is that most people will be listening to them through cheap earbuds or a phone's mono-speaker. So they can crush the bitrate to save on bandwidth.
They also seem to be doing something to the audio to emphasize the mid-range for vocal impact, but I don't know if anyone has actually done a deep dive on the technical side of that or not.

Youtube has also always been weird about this stuff. You used to have problems where the 480p (and under) audio would sound like shit when 720p+ was perfectly fine.

They do dumb encoding / re-encoding stuff in the background all the time and it can also fuck up previously good videos.

Unironically her best work since Your Mori.

Her musical quality, despite improving in technical ability, has nosedived since joining UMG since her music stopped feeling like it was *hers*.

First two songs made me concerned about the EP (Future Island straight up doesn’t belong), but the second half of the album felt like it was Mori’s music again.

L4DL is such a sad song of lamenting, but is probably one of the best songs she has written in a long time. The references made in it, the Red melody motif within the instrumental, lyrics that feel from the heart, and allowing her strained voice to make it into the final mix all worked together to create a complete experience that tied the emotions of the EP together.

Bit of a word puke, but honest thoughts.

Honestly, I think the hype was deflated because of the "early release" which gave basically anyone their choice of platform to listen to the song for like, what? 18 hours before the MVs release. It really feels like any MV Mori releases after the album/MV releases struggles massively, just look at Dance Past Midnight, Scuffed Up Age, and Wanted Wasted, all great songs released after the EP/Album they are tied to, they really struggled in views compared to songs released before the project launch.
