People usually have a pattern on how they approach and attack so looking for a way to counter that playstyle
Example:
You are a ken spamming fireball and people keep jumping over them
you can either: DP when opponent jumps, avoid using fireball or cancel into whatever you want to counter

You just need to learn to adjust your playstyle. One of those things that can be really hard based on how someone 'plays' a fighter. For example, I don't learn any not simple setups, character/height specific combos, or anything like that. I spend more time playing the game and I tend to adapt after my gameplan gets hard counter a few times. Maybe not perfectly immediately, but adjusting around how I'm expected to play is in my head. People who learn 'flowcharts' or 'win conditions' tend to have it harder to adjust. New players also have this problem, though they also have issues learning to block and similar stuff.

Like others said, you just need to play. That is why I discourage sitting in training mode for lower level players outside of getting familiar with your moves on a basic level (range, launcher, etc). Matches get your basics refined then you can do all that sweaty shit if you choose.

I'm lower intermediate level by the way. I've fought (for example) pink squares in bbtag as a light green and did fine after getting used to the game again (after a year break or more). Fundies are way more important than bs setups for general/casual/non-highest level play.

First you figure out your own habits.
Then you figure out what people are doing in reaction to that and counter them. Find ways to punish them for trying to punish you.
Then when you get good enough that there are more instances of nothing happening (AKA neutralling), you start figuring out their habits and see how you can get your own habits into play.
