I've read a lot of economic books recently and I think the main problem of the Philippines is that you guys never had any bloody big wars to topple the elite class.

True. The biggest example of this is the Philippine Congress, which is mostly made up of wealthy land-owning elites. In South Korea and Japan, big landowners were forced to sell off their land in one way or another, which in turn forced them into looking for other sources of profit such as export manufacturing. This is why they have giants like Nissan, Mitsubishi, Samsung, and all the other big corpos.
By comparison, in the Philippines, any attempt to redistribute land was stymied by Congress (since it's made up of people who would've been forced into riskier export industries had those attempts pushed through). This is why instead of factories, we have service-oriented and less economically efficient industries like banking and real estate development.
The saddest part about this is that because of the failure of land reform (and the subsequent lack of any meaningful export industry), the currency is shit (why would people want pesos if they can't buy anything useful with it outside the Philippines?). So Filipinos find themselves with no other option but to become janitors and maids abroad. The dollars they send back home actually prop up the part of the economy that the elites should have been propping up themselves with export manufacturing.
