AE is for motion graphics, not editing. Sure, you can use AE for editing, but it's a lot more cumbersome than just editing and getting the actual footage changes done in Premiere, then getting your effects in AE. Really, it's closer to two halves of the same workflow than two separate applications. Beyond use case, their most efficient workflows can't all be fit into one UI. As >>55959215 said, dynamic linking is incredible if you do anything beyond basic editing.

The only real downside of Adobe applications is how intimidating they are to open for the first time.

Even if you get a family member that waives their rights then you're still dependent on them taking your schedule as seriously as you. In the end a contract is the best option because it also protects you and clarifies the mutually agreed to terms and the consequences of breaching those terms.
