the big issue with touhout is that ZUN basically exhausted all of his good ideas with 12 and ever since then all he's been doing is trying out various gimmicks to try and inject fresh life into the format, and if you're talking about the doujin scene, gacha these days provide the same framework that made touhou such a ripe place for doujin works, with the added bonus of having more frequent updates and greater interactivtiy with the characters
