Hololive has brand recognition and a reputation built up by the earlier talents, so whenever they debut a new gen people already have expectations of quality. Vtubers who see this will choose to apply to Hololive in hopes of passing the audition and being part of that success, so they have many candidates to pick from. They can afford to be picky and choose nothing but the best (or who they wish to nepo.)
Small corpos are in the same situation Holo was when it started, except competition is stiffer because Holo and Niji

So the quality and number of people applying to smaller corpos isn't the same pool of talent the big corpos get, and you either reject everyone and keep trying, or you take a chance and hope they grow. But the ones that do often have a more appealing portfolio backing them up when they reapply to the big corpos, so the good ones may not even stick around, taking their fans with them instead of sticking with the small corpo because lmao nobody is loyal to a corporation no matter what people on the catalog say about blue doritos. So the small corpos stagnate and die, or make a dumb decision then die while on fire; or the talents yab themselves out of existing and take the corpo with it. As long as small corpos can't hold onto good talent long enough to grow the company's brand recognition to last even if they graduate, they're just going to be circling the drain as they bring in new blood to replace the old and they can't financially last that way. You have to spend money to earn money, but if you aren't earning anything you're going to run out of capital.


tl;dr- they should buy ads instead of thinking word of mouth will save anyone in a business plagued by groomers who try to keep the good ones to themselves.

Because those tens of thousands of viewers literally don't care about anything that's outside of their preferred brand name. Small corpos do find hidden gems like them, but they're never going to hit that level of success because the viewerbase isn't looking there.
Just look at the twins. Another corpo DID find the hidden gems and hired them. And then fired them, but that's beside the point. They now get more than a hundred times their previous numbers purely because of that blue triangle. They're not appreciably different from their time in the small corpo, minus the addition of bau bau. Just as cute as they ever were. Only real change is that they're in a different corpo now.
