The difference is between the character playing a vtuber and the vtuber playing a character. When they all start out they're leaning heavily into the former, they're some fantasy character that just happens to work for a vtuber company and that's super important in the early stages to develop the character and make it their own. But beyond a certain point leaning too heavily on the lore and staying in character all the time just ends up risking becoming cringe more than anything. At some point they need to transition into the later when they start to relax and become more relatable. The character is still there, it's just secondary.
