An addition to this, the actual reason why Mori likely spread is because it's an alternative to Calli which is already short-hand for Calliope which everyone agrees is too long to type contantly. The problem is that Calli is informal and implies familiarity and possibly even admiration - which in a bored predisposed to a range of opinions including neutrality and contempt means an alternative emerged.

I just don't like the way Noir sounds in my head so I stick to Vesper. Noir, like Calliope, don't strike me as good words for a name. The former feels like it lacks the impact a name should have, while the latter just sounds goofy.
The explanation from >>55249542 mirrors my own opinion on Mori vs Calli. It's a distancing thing because I don't view her in an especially affectionate light so a cutesy-sounding informal nickname is unsuitable. Mori is simply more appropriate for neutrality. If she's your oshi though, by all means call her Calli if you like.

as to why she does that, for whatever reason, people /here/ called her that from the getgo immediately instead of Calliope. back in sep2020 I think a lot of newfags here for whatever reason didn't know that in Japanese the last name is listed first, so she should technically have been called calli, but thought Mori is her first name actually. mori debuted first, she was the first-ever holoEN to take to the air, so the chance for people to go "umm ackshually you're saying her name wrong" wasn't there yet and the entire debut was just flooded out with hype/cringe/excitement over it to care. so she just became mori here and was always called that, whether you liked her or hated her there was no difference - it's mori. it always was.

also "calli" is just kind of lame name, very un-kayfabe, like I knew girls in middle school named calli and it just makes this all feel lame if they have a plain real-person name, it feels too localized like an anime dub.

People do swap Mori/Calliope a lot however for whatever reason, for one Mori is a way cooler name that fits her theme, but she also just calls herself Mori quite often. I only ever see the people calling her "Calli" as being like, twitter shits and the fucking lame Takamori shippers and such personally. It's the pleb mark to call her that.

Interestingly people used to swap Ame/Watson back and forth a fair degree too when she was new (Gura herself called her Watson) but it's basically-stuck on Ame now.
