I don't care about the controversy so I went into it expecting nothing at all. It's just kind of a boring anime. If it was genuinely amazing, maybe the controversy would've been offset somewhat.
Season 1 was good because it kind of blindsides you by being genuinely fun to watch and also having a mystery in the background that builds up over time. I think most people were watching it to deliberately shit on it initially until Tsuchinoko drops the "so the humans didn't go completely extinct" line and everyone went "wait shit this is actually serious". Season 2 by its very nature just can't take advantage of this, and what little they address from 1 isn't really developed much further or in interesting ways. This is frustrating to me because the gacha game had an interesting storyline with the Cellien Queen that they could've exploited.
Also the ending seems to be partially dedicated to taking a big fat buffalo diarrhea dump all over Season 1's protagonist which is just... an incredibly retarded thing to do all things considered, and also undeserved because 2's protagonist is not that good.

A lot of the other characters are based on real people as well. But I don't think the show exists to put down idol fans at all. I'm confident in what I'm saying, though. Ruby's idolization of Ai is something that motivates her and allowed her to feel happy and fulfilled even as a cancer patient. It is something that explicitly improved her life and informs her motivations later. Ryousuke is one thing that happens rather early on and then not really again, which kind of makes me feel like people watch up to Ai's death scene, get really pissed off because they think the show's trying to preach to them about not getting overly attached to idols, and then stop watching afterwards. It's not like that at all. MEM-cho becoming an idol is treated as a good thing. Kana becoming an idol is treated as a good thing.
The reality about Ai's death is that it has nothing to do with how Ryousuke feels about it at all. He's a plot device, he doesn't matter. Him being a schizo is not so much the point so much as it is the fact that Ai's lies and her decision to be honest instead were what ultimately sealed her grave. After all, it was not Ryousuke who truly killed her, but Namiki by proxy, and Namiki is not a fan - he is an industry actor.

I think that even if we give all the concessions we can to the mangaka and interpret in the most positive light as we possibly can, as you did, it doesn't really matter. Even if your interpretation is coming from the from a direct link to the mangaka brain and this is exactly what he meant the thing wills still be pushed and used as a hit piece not only against obsessive idol fans but at the entire idol culture.

Zain here. The twins have a similar spirit to Polka in my eyes. They really do feel like they were pulled out of the mid-2000s heyday of /a/, Niconico and the like. It's the same reason I love her (and now love these dogs as my No. 2). You can tell they love entertaining and this kind of culture so much they can't contain it.
