It's popular because the main idea was challenging the idea a woman isn't wife material just becuase she isn't a virgin. To be fair, you should really only get to have the expectation that your partner is a virgin if you yourself are also a virgin, otherwise it's kind of hypocritical. Likewise, it's just as hypocritical to say that no one has a right to care about your bodycount when you are attempting to date someone with less experience than you.
But if you are a virgin, then there isn't anything wrong with wanting to experience that part of your life with someone else who is similar to you. A virgin entering into a relationship with a non-virgin can be a social and romantic power imbalance, and I would argue that relationship experience matters way more than age difference.
