An alternative reason for Hololive's recline is that Hololive does not attract normalfags much at all and is still very much a niche and deepseated in the otaku realm in its home country. Nijisanji on the other hand is way better at attracting "tourists" if you would i.e. Koshien/GTA who like E-Sports over actual VTubing itself. More fandoms, such as the baseball and e-sports or IRL streamer ones, naturally flock to Nijisanji because they get more of these connections on a regular basis, and during the summer, this is the viewerbase that takes the largest share of live numbers. This can only mean that VTubing hasn't officially become mainstream in Japan yet despite what people here have been saying and that summerfags (or the many sects of normalfag fanbases) are why Nijisanji is seemingly ahead of Hololive at the moment. If I'm a Hololive fan I wouldn't worry too much about their current numbers, I'd worry about September and onwards; if it can reclaim its glory it had years prior and to show that when certain events or ongoing projects (namely VCR-related stuff) aren't going on, that Hololive is largely unthreatened in those times.
