I think it only works if you're physically present there because you get proper context for the phrases and also get to test out your interpretations

Haachama always made good use of BGM. A mix the the regular stuff, fan made stuff, original content, and classical music. She'd switch it up to get the mood just right. Really liked that about her streams. RIP Chama.

My recommendation would be to learn to read first, if you can read LNs semi-fluidly, then your brain just has to get used to picking the meaning up from listening. And yes, those are quite different, Japanese has very few sounds and when reading, ironically the kanji, the hardest part, become a big crutch conveying meaning which you don't have when listening.
I would recommend watching easier streams first (I watched Pekora's 12 hour Minecraft speedrun at the beginning) and then switch to more difficult ones (Zatsudan, streams of story driven games with lots of dialogue). Just keep going, the progress should be quite fast, I went from understanding just parts to basically understanding everything in 100-200 hours of streams.

Kiara often digs through the bgm list they have for different ones because she's afraid they'll get overused. The sad thing is that she just forgets about the older ones she already has so she ends up looping pretty frequently for many games anyways.
